“A Blue State Just Flipped Red”? The Nevada Claim Behind the Viral Graphic

Preview

Verdict: MISLEADING — Nevada did flip Republican at the presidential level in 2024, but the “just flipped” claim is old, and Nevada has not become a uniformly Republican state.

A dramatic viral graphic declares that “A Blue State Just Flipped” and highlights Nevada on a red national map. The implication is that Nevada has just now switched from Democratic to Republican control.

That is not what the current evidence shows.

There was a significant Republican breakthrough in Nevada: Donald Trump carried the state in the November 5, 2024 presidential election, becoming the first Republican presidential nominee to win Nevada since 2004. But as of September 19, 2026, Nevada's political control remains divided, and the 2026 governor's election has not yet occurred.

Nevada really did flip in 2024

The most important fact behind the graphic is genuine.

In 2020, Joe Biden carried Nevada with 50.06% of the vote to Trump's 47.67%. Four years later, Trump reversed the result.

The official 2024 statewide figures were:

  • Donald Trump: 751,205 votes — 50.59%
  • Kamala Harris: 705,197 — 47.49%
  • Trump margin: 46,008 votes, or about 3.1 percentage points
  • Nevada's six electoral votes went to Trump.

It was a meaningful change. Nevada had voted Democratic in every presidential election from 2008 through 2020, making Trump's 2024 victory a clear presidential-level flip.

So if the graphic had said:

“Nevada flipped Republican in the 2024 presidential election”

that would have been factually accurate.

The problem is the word “just.”

It did not just happen

The 2024 presidential election was nearly two years ago.

As of September 2026, Trump has already been president for more than a year and a half, and Nevada's 2026 general election is still ahead.

The state's next gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo is seeking another term against Democratic nominee Aaron Ford.

In other words, there has been no September 2026 statewide Republican “flip” of Nevada corresponding to the graphic.

The graphic appears to be presenting an older political development as though it were breaking news.

Nevada is not politically “red” across the board

This is where the graphic's map becomes particularly misleading.

Nevada currently has a Republican governor. Joe Lombardo, who was first elected in 2022, remains governor in September 2026.

But Democrats continue to control both chambers of the state Legislature.

Nevada Senate

The state Senate currently has:

13 Democrats — 8 Republicans

Democrat Nicole Cannizzaro is majority leader.

Nevada Assembly

The Assembly has:

27 Democrats — 15 Republicans

Democrats therefore hold substantial majorities in both legislative chambers.

That produces a much more complicated picture than simply coloring the entire state red.

Republican governor + Democratic Legislature + Republican presidential vote in 2024 is a better description of Nevada's current political landscape.

The 2026 governor's race is still unresolved

The graphic could also be interpreted as suggesting that Nevada has flipped Republican because of the 2026 governor's contest.

That has not happened.

Lombardo is the Republican incumbent, while Aaron Ford is the Democratic nominee. The election is scheduled for November 3.

The race is competitive enough that its eventual result could change Nevada's executive-branch balance, but that is a future election, not an accomplished flip.

Recent polling also illustrates why it would be premature to describe the gubernatorial result as settled. A September Emerson poll had Ford at 44.2% and Lombardo at 42%, with other candidates receiving smaller shares.

That is a polling measurement, not an election result.

There is another Republican opportunity in Nevada

The 2026 cycle does contain a notable congressional contest.

Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, traditionally a safe Republican seat, became open after Republican Rep. Mark Amodei announced his retirement.

Republican David Flippo is facing Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson. The race has attracted unusual attention because some polling has shown a close contest, although other analyses continue to view the district as strongly Republican.

But again, that is a race that has not been decided.

It cannot legitimately be described as a completed Democratic or Republican “flip” before voters cast their ballots and the results are certified.

The larger story: Nevada really has moved rightward

The viral graphic is exaggerated, but it is built around a genuine political trend.

Nevada moved substantially toward Trump between 2020 and 2024. The state shifted 5.5 percentage points toward Trump between those presidential elections, according to an analysis of Nevada's 2024 results.

Trump's improvement was particularly significant among some working-class and Hispanic voters, while Democrats continued to have substantial support in the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

The result is a state that is increasingly difficult to describe with a simple red-or-blue label.

That distinction matters because winning one presidential election does not automatically transfer control of a state's governorship, Legislature, Senate delegation or congressional delegation.

What the viral graphic gets right — and wrong

Claim in the graphicReality
Nevada is highlighted as a state that moved RepublicanTrue at the presidential level
Trump flipped NevadaTrue in 2024
Nevada was historically Democratic before thatBroadly true in recent presidential history
Nevada “just flipped”False/misleading — the presidential flip happened in 2024
Nevada is now entirely RepublicanFalse
Republicans control Nevada's state governmentFalse — the governor is Republican, but both legislative chambers are Democratic
Nevada's 2026 political future is settledFalse — major elections are still pending

The most important distinction: “state flipped” can mean several different things

Political graphics often blur together several different measurements.

A state can:

  1. Vote Republican for president
  2. Elect a Republican governor
  3. Elect a Republican U.S. senator
  4. Elect a majority-Republican congressional delegation
  5. Give Republicans control of its state Legislature
  6. Become a Republican trifecta, with one party controlling the governorship and both legislative chambers

Those are different outcomes.

Nevada currently illustrates why the distinction matters.

Trump won the presidential vote in 2024. Lombardo is governor. Yet Democrats retain both chambers of the Nevada Legislature, and Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto remains in the Senate. The state's political system therefore has split partisan control, rather than having simply “turned red.”

Bottom line

The viral graphic is based on a real political shift but misrepresents its timing and scope.

Nevada really did flip from Democratic to Republican in the 2024 presidential election. Trump won the state with 50.59% of the vote after Biden had carried it in 2020. That was a significant development and the state's first Republican presidential win since 2004.

But Nevada did not “just flip” in September 2026. Its 2026 governor's election is still pending, Republicans do not control the state Legislature, and several major races remain undecided.

The strongest factual description is therefore:

Nevada shifted Republican at the presidential level in 2024, but it remains a politically divided state in 2026.

Verdict: MISLEADING — REAL 2024 PRESIDENTIAL FLIP, RECYCLED AS “BREAKING” NEWS AND EXAGGERATED INTO A STATEWIDE REPUBLICAN TAKEOVER.
