A terrifying blast ripped through the vicinity of a busy marketplace in southwestern Yemen on September 21, sending people running as smoke and debris suddenly filled the scene.

Surveillance footage reviewed by Reuters shows the apparent strike hitting near Al Hajaf market in Lahij Governorate, with shoppers and bystanders scrambling for safety moments after the explosion.

Fox News later published the footage, showing a brief but dramatic sequence in which people scatter, smoke rises rapidly, and the marketplace turns chaotic within seconds.

Yemen’s internationally recognized, Saudi-backed government said two missiles struck the market area that afternoon, with the projectiles reportedly hitting roughly an hour apart during the busy midday period.

The market is located outside the Bab al-Mandab Commercial Complex in Al Hajaf, within Al-Mudharabah wa Ras Al-Arah District of Lahij Governorate, according to Yemeni officials and local reports.

Local authorities said the strikes occurred around midday, when the market was busy with shoppers and passersby, increasing the immediate risk to civilians in the area.

Yemen’s Human Rights Ministry reported that several civilians were injured and that shops, vehicles, and other commercial property were damaged in the attack, though it did not provide a final casualty count.

The ministry blamed Houthi forces and said preliminary information suggested the missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Ibb Governorate, but those claims remain allegations.

Other regional reports also attributed the attack to the Houthis, describing the weapons as ballistic missiles and placing the market near the strategically important Bab al-Mandab area.

Reuters, however, could not independently determine what type of projectile appears in the surveillance videos or establish who actually launched the strike, leaving responsibility unresolved.

That distinction matters because the available footage clearly records an explosion, but visual evidence alone does not establish the weapon’s origin, launch point, or responsible party.

The uncertainty comes amid renewed fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces, with battles intensifying around strategic highlands in Taiz and Lahij provinces in recent weeks.

Reuters reported that Houthi fighters were pushing toward the Kahboub Mountains, seeking positions that could potentially connect their forces with Yemen’s Red Sea coastline.

The escalation is unfolding close to Bab al-Mandab, a major maritime chokepoint linking the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and an important route for international shipping.

Recent fighting has already produced broader humanitarian consequences, with the United Nations reporting that more than 130,000 people had been displaced during September as violence spread.

The marketplace incident therefore occurred within a rapidly deteriorating security environment, where military advances, missile attacks, and competing claims are unfolding across southern and western Yemen.

For civilians caught inside the market, the political and military disputes offered little protection when the apparent strike arrived without warning and sent crowds rushing away.

The surveillance video has become the most striking visual record of the incident, but it leaves the central question unresolved: who launched the projectile that caused the blast?

As competing accounts circulate, investigators will need additional evidence, including damage analysis, debris identification, trajectory information, and independent witness testimony, to establish responsibility more conclusively.

For now, the verified picture is unsettling but limited: an apparent strike hit near a crowded market in Al Hajaf, civilians fled, and the attacker remains unconfirmed.
