Adam Schiff Under Pressure: Could the California Democrat Be the Next Lawmaker to Leave Congress?

A provocative political image featuring Democratic Senator Adam Schiff has reignited questions about his future in Washington, asking whether the California lawmaker should be the next member of Congress to resign. The message comes at a politically sensitive moment, with Americans preparing to vote in the November 3 midterm elections.

The image presents resignation as a question rather than announcing an actual departure. That distinction is important: a call for a politician to resign is not evidence that the politician intends to leave office or has been found guilty of wrongdoing.

Schiff has been one of the most recognizable Democratic critics of President Donald Trump for years. His prominence in congressional investigations, national security debates, and impeachment proceedings has made him a frequent target of Republican criticism.

Before entering the Senate, Schiff represented California in the House of Representatives for more than two decades. He became nationally prominent while serving as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

During Trump's first presidency, Schiff played a central role in congressional scrutiny of Russian interference in the 2016 election and the administration's conduct toward Ukraine.

He subsequently served as the lead House impeachment manager during Trump's first impeachment trial, arguing that the president had abused the powers of his office.

Trump and his allies strongly disputed Schiff's allegations and repeatedly accused him of misleading the public. Those confrontations established a political rivalry that continued well beyond Trump's first term.

In 2023, the Republican-controlled House voted to censure Schiff over his statements and conduct related to investigations of Trump. Schiff rejected the criticism, describing the action as politically motivated.

The censure was a formal expression of congressional disapproval. It was not a criminal conviction and did not remove him from office.

Schiff went on to win California's 2024 U.S. Senate election, defeating fellow Democrat Steve Garvey's opponent? No—Garvey was the Republican candidate whom Schiff defeated. Schiff's victory gave him a six-year Senate term extending into January 2031.

His election to the Senate demonstrated that, despite fierce opposition from national Republicans, he retained substantial electoral support in California.

The renewed criticism has also been fueled by questions about Schiff's financial disclosures and real estate history. His ownership of properties in California and Maryland has attracted scrutiny, including allegations concerning how residential properties were described in mortgage documents.

Such allegations must be evaluated against the actual documents, applicable lending requirements, and evidence of intent. Owning multiple properties or maintaining residences in different states is not, by itself, proof of mortgage fraud.

Schiff has rejected accusations of financial misconduct. Political opponents have nevertheless continued to raise questions about his conduct, arguing that elected officials should face the same scrutiny they demand of others.

The distinction between a political allegation and a proven legal violation remains essential. An investigation does not establish guilt, and a resignation demand does not carry the force of a court judgment.

For Schiff's supporters, the pressure against him reflects a broader effort by Trump-aligned Republicans to discredit one of the president's most persistent critics.

For his opponents, the controversy is about accountability and whether public officials who have investigated others should themselves be subject to rigorous examination.

The dispute also highlights the different ways members of Congress can leave office. A senator may voluntarily resign, be expelled by a two-thirds vote of the Senate, or leave when a term expires.

Political criticism alone cannot force a senator from office. Nor can the president directly dismiss an independently elected member of Congress.

Schiff's Senate term is scheduled to continue until January 2031, meaning he is not facing a regular reelection contest in the November 2026 midterms.

That does not mean the election is irrelevant to his political future. A change in congressional control could influence the balance of power in Washington, the direction of oversight investigations, and the ability of lawmakers to advance their legislative priorities.

As the election approaches, political figures from both parties are using questions of ethics, public trust, and accountability to motivate voters. Schiff's long history of confrontation with Trump makes him a particularly visible figure in that debate.

Yet public dissatisfaction, however strongly expressed, is different from a verified announcement that a senator intends to resign.
