Did Ron DeSantis Really Call Hakeem Jeffries a “Dollar Tree Obama”?

Preview

A viral graphic asks a provocative question:

“Do you still stand with Ron DeSantis after he called Hakeem Jeffries a ‘Dollar Tree Obama’?”

The underlying controversy is real — but the wording in the graphic is not quite accurate.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis did use a similar phrase during a clash with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries over Florida's congressional redistricting. However, DeSantis did not literally say, “I call him a Dollar Tree Obama.” His actual wording was that “they call him a dollar store Obama,” while discussing criticism of Jeffries from the political left.

That distinction is important.

What Did Ron DeSantis Actually Say?

The exchange occurred in April 2026, as DeSantis and Jeffries traded increasingly sharp rhetoric over Florida's proposed congressional redistricting plans.

Jeffries had warned Florida Republicans that they could face aggressive Democratic political retaliation if the state moved forward with a new congressional map. In one widely circulated statement, he used the phrase “F around and find out” while attacking what he called a “DeSantis dummy-mander.”

DeSantis responded by inviting Jeffries to campaign in Florida.

He said he would even pay for Jeffries to come to the state and stay at the governor's mansion, arguing that Jeffries' presence would benefit Florida Republicans politically.

Then DeSantis added that Jeffries was very far to the left politically, but claimed the far left itself disliked him.

His wording, according to available transcripts, was:

“They call him ‘dollar store Obama’ and ‘AIPAC Shakur,’ all these derogatory names.”

“Dollar Tree Obama” or “Dollar Store Obama”?

This is where the viral graphic becomes misleading.

The graphic says:

“Dollar Tree Obama.”

DeSantis actually said:

“Dollar store Obama.”

Those phrases are obviously similar, and both refer to the same type of insult — suggesting that Jeffries is a supposedly inferior imitation of former President Barack Obama.

But “Dollar Tree” is not the wording shown in the available transcript of DeSantis' remarks.

More importantly, DeSantis framed the phrase as something “they call him,” referring to critics on the far left, rather than explicitly presenting it as his own nickname for Jeffries.

The Remark Came During a Redistricting War

The dispute was not originally about Barack Obama or Jeffries' personal background.

It began with a broader national battle over congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Jeffries warned that Democrats would aggressively target Republican-held seats if Florida moved ahead with a redistricting effort that Democrats characterized as an attempt to give Republicans an electoral advantage.

DeSantis fired back by essentially daring Jeffries to bring the political fight to Florida.

The governor said there was nothing Republicans would like more than seeing Jeffries campaign extensively around the state.

The clash quickly turned from a policy dispute into a highly personal war of words.

Jeffries Fired Back at DeSantis

Jeffries did not back away.

During the same period, he attacked DeSantis as a “lame duck” and criticized the governor's redistricting plans.

The confrontation became part of a much larger national argument over who should control the process of drawing congressional districts — and how aggressively both parties should use redistricting to gain seats before November.

Associated Press reporting has described DeSantis' renewed redistricting push as part of a broader national partisan battle over congressional maps.

Why the Obama Comparison Is So Controversial

Hakeem Jeffries is one of the most prominent Black political leaders in the United States and serves as House Democratic leader.

Comparisons between Jeffries and Barack Obama have circulated online for years, including nicknames such as “Temu Obama,” “Great Value Obama” and “Dollar Store Obama.” The phrases have generated criticism, with some supporters arguing that such comparisons carry racial undertones, while critics describe them as ordinary political mockery.

That context is why the DeSantis remark immediately attracted attention.

Even though DeSantis phrased it as “they call him” rather than directly declaring the nickname himself, he repeated the insult publicly while criticizing Jeffries.

What the Viral Graphic Gets Right — and What It Gets Wrong

✓ What it gets right

Ron DeSantis did publicly use the phrase “dollar store Obama” while talking about Hakeem Jeffries.

The comment was part of a direct political confrontation between DeSantis and Jeffries.

The controversy is connected to the wider fight over Florida's congressional redistricting.

✗ What it gets wrong or oversimplifies

The phrase in the image is “Dollar Tree Obama,” but DeSantis' reported wording was “dollar store Obama.”

DeSantis did not simply say, “Hakeem Jeffries is a Dollar Store Obama.”

Instead, he said that “they call him” that and other derogatory names, while discussing Jeffries' relationship with the political left.

That does not mean DeSantis rejected the phrase — he repeated it publicly — but it does change the precise meaning of the viral claim.

The Bigger Political Fight Is Still About Power

Behind the nickname controversy is a far more consequential battle.

DeSantis and Florida Republicans are pursuing redistricting changes that Democrats say could reshape the state's congressional delegation. DeSantis has argued that Florida's political landscape and population changes justify revisiting the maps, while Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to engineer additional GOP seats.

Jeffries has made clear that Democrats intend to fight those efforts aggressively.

And DeSantis has made equally clear that he is willing to turn Jeffries himself into a political target in Florida.

So the viral graphic captures a real political feud, but its wording compresses a more nuanced reality into a simpler accusation.

The most accurate version is this:

Ron DeSantis said that critics on the far left “call” Hakeem Jeffries a “dollar store Obama.” He repeated the phrase during a public attack on Jeffries — but the viral graphic inaccurately changes it to “Dollar Tree Obama” and makes it sound as though DeSantis directly coined or personally assigned the nickname.
