Donald Trump Jr. used the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas to remember Charlie Kirk one year after the conservative activist was assassinated, portraying his late friend as a symbol of light and political conviction

Preview

Speaking before a Republican audience, Trump Jr. described Kirk as “good” and “pure,” saying he represented what conservatives viewed as the positive ideals behind their political movement.

He then sharply contrasted Kirk with his alleged killer and with people he accused of mocking the activist’s death, describing them collectively as representing “darkness” in America’s political struggle.

The remarks came during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, an unusual national gathering organized by the party to rally supporters ahead of the November 2026 congressional elections.

The convention included a five-minute memorial tribute to Kirk, during which the normally energetic arena became quiet as videos showed moments from his political career and work with young conservatives.

Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, where his campus debates had attracted thousands of students and supporters.

Utah prosecutors accuse 23-year-old Tyler Robinson of carrying out the shooting. Robinson has pleaded not guilty to capital murder and six additional charges in connection with Kirk’s death.

Prosecutors say Robinson positioned himself on a rooftop before firing the fatal shot, potentially endangering thousands of people attending the campus event, according to evidence presented in court.

Defense attorneys dispute the prosecution’s characterization of the case, arguing that the shooting involved a single victim and should not qualify for a capital murder charge.

Kirk’s death profoundly affected the American conservative movement, particularly younger Republicans who had followed his campus appearances, podcast, speeches and organizing efforts through Turning Point USA.

The organization has continued operating under the leadership of Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who became its chief executive after his death and has increasingly appeared at public conservative events.

At the Dallas convention, Vice President JD Vance also honored Kirk and urged Republicans to preserve his political legacy rather than allowing internal disagreements to weaken the movement.

Vance recalled Kirk’s friendship and influence within Republican politics, describing him as someone who helped younger conservatives navigate the movement and encouraged cooperation among competing factions.

Trump Jr. similarly presented Kirk’s legacy as unfinished, telling supporters that Republicans should continue the work his friend championed and carry forward what he called Kirk’s political torch.

The tribute also reflected the increasingly intense political rhetoric surrounding Kirk’s assassination, with conservative leaders repeatedly citing his death when warning about political violence and ideological hostility.

Trump Jr. used the moment not only to remember Kirk but also to frame the approaching midterm elections as a broader contest between competing visions for America’s future.

He argued that Republicans represented “common sense,” while portraying the political left as increasingly extreme, continuing a message that dominated speeches throughout the Republican convention in Dallas.

The rhetoric underscored how Kirk’s death has become part of the Republican Party’s broader political narrative, linking his personal legacy to questions about ideology, political violence and the movement’s future.

One year after the assassination, Kirk remains an influential figure within conservative politics, while his organization continues expanding and his death remains at the center of an ongoing criminal case.

Trump Jr.’s emotional tribute demonstrated that Kirk’s influence extends beyond his former role as a political organizer, with Republican leaders increasingly presenting his memory as a symbol of their movement’s continuing struggle
