Elon Musk Steps Into Texas Senate Race as Republicans Rally Behind Ken Paxton

A Newsmax graphic claims that Elon Musk is stepping in as Republicans scramble to defend a Texas Senate seat.
The claim is substantially accurate. Musk’s political action committee, America PAC, has begun spending money to support Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton, whose race against Democrat James Talarico has become unexpectedly competitive in a state Republicans have dominated for decades.
However, the graphic simplifies the situation. Musk is not personally taking over the campaign; his super PAC is providing financial and organizational support as Republican groups try to close a significant fundraising gap.
Musk’s PAC has begun spending on Paxton’s behalf
Federal filings show that America PAC spent nearly $250,000 supporting Paxton in its first reported candidate-focused spending of the 2026 midterm cycle. The Texas Senate race received the largest initial share of the PAC’s spending.
The spending later expanded. Reuters reported that America PAC had spent more than $800,000 across a number of competitive congressional races, with Texas among its principal targets.
Newsmax reported that almost half of another approximately $2.9 million round of America PAC spending was directed toward Texas.
That makes the graphic’s “steps in” language reasonable, although the involvement is primarily through political spending rather than a public campaign appearance by Musk himself.
Why Republicans are worried about the race
The Republican nominee is Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general and a strongly pro-Trump conservative.
He is facing James Talarico, who has made affordability and household costs central themes of his campaign.
The race became competitive after a bruising Republican primary in which Paxton defeated longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn. Republican leaders had spent months attacking Paxton during the primary, leaving the party with the difficult task of unifying behind a nominee who has struggled financially against Talarico.
The Texas contest is particularly important because Republicans have not elected a Democrat statewide in many years. A Democratic victory would represent a major political shock and could threaten the GOP’s Senate majority.
Talarico has reportedly built a major fundraising advantage
According to reporting cited by Newsmax, Talarico has raised more at this stage of the campaign than any Texas general-election candidate in the previous decade, while Paxton has raised less than one-quarter as much since the race began.
That financial imbalance is one reason national Republican groups are now directing money toward Texas.
Republican outside groups were reportedly spending millions on advertising during the first week of September. Newsmax said GOP organizations were spending a combined approximately $11 million that week, compared with about $4 million from Talarico’s campaign.
The numbers show that the Republican Party is treating the race as a serious defensive operation rather than assuming Texas will automatically remain red.
Trump and Republican leaders are also mobilizing
Musk is not the only national figure becoming involved.
President Donald Trump has said he plans to devote more political resources to candidates who can win or are close to winning. Trump also headlined a Republican fundraising event in Texas as Paxton sought to consolidate support after the primary.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has argued that the president and national Republican resources need to be brought to bear in Texas.
The Republican National Committee is also holding a major midterm convention in Dallas, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance scheduled to headline separate nights.
Musk has a growing political and business presence in Texas
Musk’s interest in the state is not purely electoral.
Several of his businesses have expanded operations in Texas, and Musk has increasingly described the state as supportive of technology and business. In July, he told Gov. Greg Abbott that he loved being in Texas and considered it emblematic of American values.
His political return also follows a period of tension and reconciliation with Trump. Musk previously became deeply involved in federal politics through his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, later acknowledging that he had become too involved in politics.
That history makes his renewed spending politically significant. Musk has both the financial resources and the national profile to influence Republican turnout and advertising efforts.
Democrats are trying to turn Musk into a liability
Democrats are already portraying Musk’s involvement as a political weakness for Paxton.
House Majority PAC communications director CJ Warnke called Musk unpopular and argued that his presence could hurt Republican candidates, pointing to his involvement in earlier elections.
This creates a strategic dilemma for Republicans: Musk can provide substantial financial support, but his public image may also give Democrats an opportunity to nationalize the race around billionaire influence, corporate power and political spending.
Is Texas really in play?
The race should not be treated as a guaranteed Democratic pickup.
Texas remains a Republican-leaning state, and Republican strategists continue to predict that Paxton will win. Former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said the contest could be closer than Republicans want but still predicted a Paxton victory.
At the same time, polling has shown unusual strength for Talarico. A July Texas Public Opinion Research survey reportedly placed Talarico ahead 45% to 40%, including a nine-point advantage among voters without college degrees. Other polls have shown a closer contest, with some putting the candidates in a statistical tie.
The most important issue may be the economy. Talarico has focused on groceries, housing, utilities, insurance, childcare and other costs that affect voters regardless of party affiliation.
What the graphic gets right — and what it leaves out
The graphic is accurate in several important respects:
- Musk’s America PAC has begun spending to support Ken Paxton.
- Paxton is facing a serious financial disadvantage.
- Republican national groups are directing substantial resources toward Texas.
- The race has become more competitive than Republicans expected.
- The contest could have consequences for control of the Senate.
But the image also uses dramatic language:
- “Musk steps in” refers mainly to PAC spending, not Musk personally running the campaign.
- “GOP scrambles” is a political characterization, though Republican fundraising and advertising efforts have clearly intensified.
- The race is competitive, but it is not yet established that Paxton is likely to lose.
- Texas remains Republican-leaning, even as Talarico has gained ground among independents and some traditionally Republican voters.
Bottom line
The graphic is mostly accurate. Elon Musk’s America PAC has entered the Texas Senate contest with significant spending aimed at helping Ken Paxton, and Republican leaders are mobilizing because Paxton faces a major fundraising disadvantage against James Talarico.
The larger story is not simply that Musk is rescuing a Republican candidate. It is that a race once expected to be safely Republican has become competitive enough to attract national money, presidential attention and billionaire political spending.
