Georgetown Students Face Backlash Over Planned Charlie Kirk 'Lookalike Contest' on Assassination Anniversary

Turning Point USA is condemning students at Georgetown University for allegedly planning a Charlie Kirk "lookalike contest" on the one-year anniversary of the conservative activist's assassination. The university has distanced itself from the event, saying it is not officially planned, but the controversy has reignited debate about political discourse and civility on college campuses.

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University students are under fire for allegedly organizing a Charlie Kirk "lookalike contest" set for Sept. 10 — exactly one year after the Turning Point USA founder was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University .

The event was promoted on Fizz, an anonymous social media platform popular at Georgetown, where a post advertising the contest received more than 2,200 upvotes — roughly a third of the university's undergraduate population . The post read: "Charlie Kirk lookalike contest. September 10th 2026. Pull up to Copley Lawn to speak the truth while the cost is high" .

Copley Lawn is an area just outside Healy Hall, Georgetown's iconic castle-like landmark .

A Growing Backlash

Turning Point USA's Georgetown chapter has condemned the posts, calling them a disrespectful mockery of Kirk's death .

Andrew Kolvet, a TPUSA spokesman, slammed the anonymous organizers in a statement: "A culture that can no longer simply mourn the fallen, or respect them enough to at least keep their mouth shut, is a culture that has lost touch with a basic sense of shared humanity. Shame on any of the mockers and trolls who debase themselves by continuously proving Charlie outclassed them in every conceivable way" .

Heidi Sui, president of Georgetown's TPUSA chapter, also spoke out: "The TPUSA Chapter at Georgetown strongly condemns any events that aim to disrespect Charlie Kirk and the upcoming memorial ceremony at UVU. ... Charlie never celebrated violence. But some liberal students do. And they are doing it right here — in our nation's capital of all places" .

Other Posts Add Fuel to the Fire

Additional posts on Fizz have added to the outrage . One user suggested an Erika Kirk lookalike contest, commenting: "Can the winner of the Charlie Kirk one be prom king with the winner of this?" .

Another post, using the phrase "Happy Kirkaversary," included an AI-generated image of Kirk with the phrases "Georgetown University," "Honoring leadership, inspiring truth," and "Charlie Kirk lookalike contest" . A separate user suggested Georgetown's choral group, The Georgetown Chimes, perform a viral AI-generated song released shortly after Kirk's death, titled "We Are Charlie Kirk" .

The University Responds

Georgetown University has distanced itself from the controversy, stating there is no evidence an official event will take place .

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a university spokesperson said: "We have seen no activity on campus related to these posts. Georgetown is not planning such an event and, to our knowledge, no student organization is hosting or planning such an event. We take these anonymous posts seriously and condemn their language as deeply inconsistent with Georgetown University's values. We are monitoring this closely to ensure the safety of the University community" .

The spokesperson added that "making light of a victim of violence is counter to our values and deeply disappointing," while acknowledging that Georgetown's policies protect free expression .

Charlie Kirk's Assassination

Kirk, co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was 31 when he was assassinated on Sept. 10, 2025 . He was shot in the neck while addressing a crowd of roughly 3,000 at Utah Valley University in Orem .

The suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, remains in custody, reportedly awaiting trial . President Donald Trump ordered all flags at federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff following Kirk's death . After his death, Erika Kirk became CEO of Turning Point USA .
