Illinois Mother Charged with Murder as Neighbors Fear 'Another Lindsay Clancy'

FRANKFORT, Ill. – A suburban Chicago mother has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old son, a case that has drawn immediate and unsettling comparisons to the high-profile Lindsay Clancy trial .

Corie A. Walsh, 40, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder on Friday in connection with the death of her son, Barrett Walsh, at the family's million-dollar home in Frankfort, about 35 miles southwest of Chicago . The case has shocked the community and reignited national conversations about maternal mental health.

A Scene of Horror

Frankfort police responded to the home just after 4 p.m. Tuesday to a report of an unresponsive child . Officers arrived to find a neighbor performing CPR on the 2-year-old boy, who had been discovered hanging in the basement . The neighbor had taken the child down and attempted to revive him while calling 911 .

The toddler was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after . The Will County Coroner's Office ruled his death an apparent homicide, with preliminary autopsy findings indicating he died from asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck .

Inside the home, officers found Walsh in an upstairs bathroom, lying fully dressed in a tub "surrounded by bloody water" with cuts to her wrists and thighs in what appeared to be a suicide attempt . A neighbor had taken a knife from her, and Walsh reportedly asked why she intervened, stating she was "trying to kill herself" .

The Lindsay Clancy Connection

According to prosecutors, Walsh had "recently become very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial" . Court documents reveal she was actively discussing Clancy's case in group text messages with friends up until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday – just three and a half hours before her son was discovered . At that time, the jury in Clancy's Massachusetts trial was still deliberating .

Walsh allegedly told officers she killed her son because "he was the devil and the anti-Christ" . She also referred to him by his nickname, "Bear," telling first responders he was "in the basement" .

Neighbors in Shock

The tragedy has left residents of the quiet Frankfort community stunned, with many drawing parallels to the Clancy case .

"This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community," neighbor Carolyn Pappas told NBC Chicago. "You never think it's going to hit so close to home" .

Ongoing Investigation

According to prosecutors, Walsh's husband was out of town at the time, and three other children were found unharmed in the home – an infant and two school-aged children . Walsh allegedly made statements about harming her other children and intended to harm her husband upon his return .

Walsh remains in custody at a hospital receiving medical treatment for her injuries, which were described as non-life-threatening . She will be transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility upon release .

The Illinois Department of Child and Family Services had no prior contact with the family until this incident . A forensic analysis of Walsh's phone is currently being conducted .
