“Iran Stuns the World”: The Viral Graphic Uses a Dead President to Portray a Current U.S.-Iran Showdown

A dramatic graphic circulating online shows Donald Trump facing Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi beneath the headline “IRAN STUNS THE WORLD.” It presents the image as though Raisi is part of the current confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

There is an immediate problem with that presentation: Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May 2024. He is not Iran’s current president and cannot be the Iranian leader making decisions in the present U.S.-Iran conflict.

Raisi was killed along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian when their helicopter crashed in mountainous terrain in northwestern Iran on May 19, 2024. Iranian authorities confirmed the deaths the following day.

Iran subsequently held a presidential election, and Masoud Pezeshkian became president. He is the Iranian president involved in the current diplomatic and military confrontation with the Trump administration.

That distinction matters because the current crisis is not a continuation of Raisi personally negotiating with Trump. It involves a different Iranian president and a substantially different geopolitical situation.

The underlying U.S.-Iran confrontation shown by the graphic, however, is very real as of October 2026.

The United States and Iran remain involved in a prolonged conflict that escalated sharply in February. Fighting has included U.S. military operations against Iran, Iranian retaliation and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported on October 1 that Tehran was preparing for potentially stronger retaliation if Washington resumed large-scale attacks.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts have continued. Iranian officials have communicated proposals through Qatari mediators, while Trump has publicly rejected or criticized elements of those proposals but has also indicated that negotiations remain possible.

Iran's current president, Pezeshkian, has publicly rejected the idea that Tehran will surrender while continuing to express support for diplomacy. During his September address to the United Nations General Assembly, he criticized Trump's pressure campaign and said Iran remained open to negotiations without accepting coercion.

The disagreement has centered partly on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy route. Iran has proposed conditions involving reopening the strait and changes to U.S. sanctions and military measures, while Washington has demanded different conditions for an agreement.

Trump has meanwhile adopted increasingly forceful rhetoric. In an interview published October 1, he said U.S. military action could resume after the November midterm elections if Washington and Tehran fail to reach an acceptable agreement. He also said he did not believe lasting peace with Iran was possible under current circumstances.

On October 2, Trump said the war would end “very soon,” possibly after the midterm elections. He also claimed that U.S. strikes had destroyed Iran's nuclear capabilities, although such statements are assertions by the president and should be distinguished from independently verified assessments.

The military situation has also affected global energy markets. Oil prices have moved sharply as investors assess the possibility of renewed U.S.-Iran fighting and continued disruption around Hormuz. Reuters reported that oil prices rose substantially in late September amid stalled negotiations and tightening fuel supplies.

The G7 responded on October 2 by agreeing to coordinate the release of up to 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from emergency reserves over four months, with diesel releases heavily frontloaded. Reuters reported that the decision followed U.S. pressure on European governments over fuel supplies.

That development provides some context for why dramatic Iran-related graphics are spreading rapidly. The conflict is affecting not only military policy but also shipping, fuel prices, international diplomacy and economic planning.

The image itself, however, offers no specific information about what Iran supposedly did to “stun the world.” It does not identify a date, statement, agreement, military action or diplomatic decision.

That is an important warning sign. A dramatic headline can be attached to genuine photographs of political leaders while the accompanying claim remains unsupported or refers to a different event.

In this case, the use of Raisi is particularly revealing. His photograph may be genuine, but placing it beside Trump in a graphic about the current Iran crisis creates a false impression that Raisi is personally involved in today's confrontation.

The current Iranian leadership structure is also more complicated than the image suggests. Although the president is a major political figure, Iran's Supreme Leader and other institutions retain substantial authority over foreign and security policy. The current president is Pezeshkian, while Iran's military and security institutions also play major roles in the conflict.

There is therefore a genuine and highly consequential U.S.-Iran confrontation behind the viral graphic, but the photograph does not accurately represent the current Iranian president.
