Kamala Harris Says She Is Considering Another Presidential Run in 2028

The former vice president has publicly left the door open to another White House campaign, but months after first acknowledging the possibility, she says she still has not made a final decision.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has openly acknowledged that she is considering another presidential campaign in 2028, but she has not announced a candidacy or made a final decision.
Harris gave one of her clearest public answers on April 10, 2026, during the National Action Network convention in New York, where Reverend Al Sharpton asked directly about 2028.
Responding to Sharpton, Harris said she “might” run and was “thinking about it,” prompting cheers from the audience and renewed national attention to her future political plans.
Harris pointed to her four years as vice president, saying her experience in the West Wing, Oval Office and Situation Room gave her a detailed understanding of the presidency.
She also said her decision would depend on where she believed she could best serve Americans, framing the question around public service rather than immediately declaring another campaign.
The April event brought together several Democrats discussed as possible 2028 candidates, including Pete Buttigieg, Josh Shapiro, JB Pritzker, Wes Moore, Andy Beshear, Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego.
Harris entered the discussion with extensive national experience: she served as California attorney general, a U.S. senator and vice president before becoming the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024.
In that 2024 election, Harris lost to Donald Trump after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed her, leaving Democrats to reorganize after the presidential defeat.
After leaving office, Harris maintained a lower political profile for several months, while continuing public appearances, book-related events and travel that kept attention focused on her next move.
She also decided not to enter California’s 2026 gubernatorial race, a choice that left open the possibility of another national campaign without committing her to the 2028 contest.
By July 2026, Harris was still publicly undecided. At an event in Tennessee, she said she had not made a decision and was focused on the upcoming midterm elections.
That clarification matters because social-media graphics can make the situation sound more settled than it is: Harris has confirmed she is considering 2028, not that she is officially running.
Her possible candidacy has become a significant factor in Democratic planning, as other nationally known politicians decide whether, when and under what circumstances they might enter the 2028 primary.
California Governor Gavin Newsom added another development in September, saying he would not seek the presidency in 2028 if Harris entered the race, citing their long political relationship.
Newsom’s statement did not confirm Harris’s plans, however. As of mid-September 2026, major reporting continued to describe her as undecided rather than an announced presidential candidate.
Harris has continued appearing at Democratic events and campaigning for party candidates, including planned appearances in competitive states, activity that naturally fuels speculation about her longer-term political ambitions.
At the National Action Network convention, Harris also argued that many Americans are dissatisfied with government and said voters want progress rather than bureaucracy, themes she could revisit politically.
Still, consideration is different from a campaign launch. Federal candidates who cross fundraising or spending thresholds must formally register and designate a principal campaign committee under Federal Election Commission rules.
The 2028 Democratic field remains unsettled, with several prominent figures keeping their options open, so Harris’s eventual decision could influence who enters the contest and how alliances develop.
For now, the most accurate version of the viral claim is simple: Kamala Harris is considering another presidential run in 2028, but she has not officially declared that she will run.
