Lindsay Clancy Defense Confirms Holdout Juror Is Male as Judge Erupts in Wild Courtroom Clash

The defense attorney in the Lindsay Clancy triple-murder trial accidentally revealed that the lone holdout juror is a man during a heated exchange with an exasperated judge who shouted, "What do you want me to do, get a brass band?" The dramatic moment came on the seventh day of deliberations.
PLYMOUTH, Massachusetts – Tensions in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial reached a boiling point Friday as defense attorney Kevin Reddington confirmed the lone holdout juror is a man and accused him of lying under oath, sparking a furious courtroom clash with Judge William Sullivan that captivated the packed gallery .
The jury, which consists of nine women and three men, has been deliberating for more than 36 hours over seven days in the case against the Massachusetts mother accused of murdering her three young children in January 2023 . The foreperson sent a note to the judge Thursday indicating one juror refuses to follow the court's instructions on reasonable doubt, creating an 11-1 deadlock .
'What Do You Want Me to Do? Get a Brass Band?'
The courtroom erupted Friday morning when Reddington demanded that Judge Sullivan reinstruct the jury on reasonable doubt with more force .
"I would ask that you not just give them a soft inquiry. I would ask that you specifically direct their attention to proof beyond a reasonable doubt and reinstruct them forcefully," Reddington said .
An exasperated Sullivan fired back: "What do you want me to do? Get a brass band? I read the instruction as written by the SJC. The fact that I perhaps didn't give it my full inflection, I'm sorry about that. I'm not an actor" .
Reddington persisted: "You did it yesterday, you did it soft, you didn't do it forcefully" .
The judge retorted that he would try to deliver the instructions with "more pizazz" .
Defense Accuses Holdout Juror of Lying Under Oath
Reddington confirmed the holdout is a man, and argued he should be removed from the jury for allegedly lying about his willingness to follow the law .
"There is one person who is refusing to apply the law to the facts determined for reasons not arising out of the case but are personal to the juror's position," Reddington said in court .
He accused the juror of making a "false statement under oath" during individual questioning by the judge Thursday . According to Reddington, the juror has admitted having doubts but refuses to apply the standard of reasonable doubt to the evidence .
"Clearly, judge, we have a person, who under their oath, stood in front of you yesterday when you did the individual voir dire, and according to this information, under oath, looked you in the eye and lied," Reddington said .
Judge Declines to Remove Holdout
Despite Reddington's demands, Judge Sullivan refused to dismiss the juror or conduct further individual questioning .
"I see no showing for the need of an inquiry of this particular juror," Sullivan said . "The note does not indicate that this is a person who has refused to follow the law" .
"I don't feel it is proper for me to side with one side or the other of the deliberations," the judge added. "I have asked if they are able to follow my instructions. They swore earlier that they could" .
'I Kicked the S*** Out of Their Case'
Reddington insisted he does not want a mistrial, telling reporters outside court that he believes his defense was strong enough to persuade a jury .
"Why would I want a mistrial? I kicked the s*** out of their case," he declared .
Prosecutors, however, have indicated they would support a mistrial if the jury remains deadlocked . Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague argued the note showed disagreement on weighing evidence, not refusal to follow the law .
Background
Lindsay Clancy, 33, is accused of killing her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and eight-month-old Callan — at their Duxbury home in January 2023 . The former labor and delivery nurse has pleaded not guilty, citing postpartum psychosis . Prosecutors acknowledge she was mentally ill but maintain she knew what she was doing at the time .
If found not criminally responsible, Clancy would be sent to a state mental health facility .
The jury was sent back to continue deliberations Friday morning. If they remain deadlocked, the judge may declare a mistrial .
