Maria Bartiromo’s Fox Exit Sparks White House Speculation

WASHINGTON — Maria Bartiromo's abrupt departure from Fox News Media has triggered a wave of speculation about her next move, including whether the veteran television host could become President Donald Trump's next White House press secretary.
But despite the rumors, there is no evidence that Bartiromo has been selected for the White House job. Vice President JD Vance has publicly pushed back on speculation that she is about to replace Karoline Leavitt, while Trump has yet to announce a permanent successor.
The timing of Bartiromo's departure, however, has made the story particularly striking: Fox announced her exit on Sept. 3, the same day Vance stepped into the White House briefing room for the first formal briefing since Leavitt's departure.
Fox News Abruptly Parts Ways With Bartiromo
Fox News Media announced Sept. 3 that Bartiromo was no longer with the company, ending a relationship that lasted more than 12 years.
The network said the separation was effective immediately and thanked Bartiromo for her work, but did not provide a specific reason for the departure.
Bartiromo had been one of Fox's most recognizable business and political personalities.
She hosted Mornings with Maria on Fox Business, Maria Bartiromo's Wall Street and Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News.
Fox said Mornings with Maria would transition to Mornings with FOX Business, with rotating anchors, while Sunday Morning Futures would temporarily be hosted by former congressman Jason Chaffetz.
Her Departure Was Not Entirely Out of Nowhere
Although Fox's announcement was sudden, Bartiromo had already been absent from television for several weeks.
Reuters reported that her last appearance on the network was Aug. 9. She did not immediately comment publicly on the reason for her departure.
That prolonged absence, followed by Fox's announcement, immediately fueled questions about what had happened behind the scenes.
Fox characterized the move as a business decision, while Bartiromo's attorney has disputed reports that she was simply fired. The circumstances surrounding the split therefore remain unclear.
Then Came the White House Speculation
The timing created an obvious question.
Karoline Leavitt had just left her position as Trump's White House press secretary, and the administration had not yet named a permanent replacement.
That led to speculation that Bartiromo could move directly from television into the White House briefing room.
The theory was fueled by Bartiromo's longstanding relationship with Trump and her prominent role within conservative media.
But at this point, the speculation remains exactly that: speculation.
JD Vance Pushes Back on the Rumors
When Vance faced questions about Bartiromo's possible appointment, he rejected the idea that her departure from Fox meant she was about to become White House press secretary.
NBC reported that Vance denied rumors that Bartiromo would replace Leavitt.
That response is particularly significant because Vance himself had just taken on the role of temporary White House communicator.
On Sept. 3, he conducted the first formal briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room since Leavitt left office.
The appearance demonstrated that the White House can rely on senior officials to handle briefings while Trump continues searching for a permanent press secretary.
Trump Has Not Chosen Leavitt's Replacement
Leavitt's departure was confirmed by the White House on Aug. 27.
The White House described that day as her final day as the 36th White House press secretary, highlighting her status as the youngest person ever to hold the position.
But Trump did not immediately appoint a successor.
CBS News reported before Leavitt's departure that Trump had not settled on a replacement and that White House briefings would rotate among senior administration officials in the meantime.
The Washington Post similarly reported that Trump had not decided who would take the position and that Cabinet members and other senior officials could continue appearing before reporters.
That makes Vance's appearance an interim arrangement, not evidence that the administration has abandoned the search.
Why Bartiromo's Name Came Up
Bartiromo would be an unusual but politically understandable candidate.
She has spent years covering Wall Street and American politics and has developed a close relationship with Trump's political movement.
Her transition from financial journalism into a more openly political role at Fox made her a familiar figure to Trump's supporters.
She also interviewed Trump numerous times and became one of the network's most prominent voices on economic and political issues.
That history explains why her sudden departure immediately generated speculation about a possible role inside the administration.
But being politically close to a president is not the same as being selected to serve as his press secretary.
Bartiromo's Fox Career Was Highly Political
Bartiromo joined Fox in 2013 after roughly two decades at CNBC, where she became one of the best-known financial journalists in American television.
Over time, her Fox programming increasingly combined financial coverage with politics and policy.
She became particularly associated with Trump and his political movement.
Her name also appeared prominently in the litigation surrounding Fox News' coverage of the 2020 presidential election.
Fox ultimately settled Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit for $787.5 million in 2023, while litigation involving Smartmatic has continued. Reuters and other outlets have noted Bartiromo's role in the network's election coverage during that period.
Her political profile therefore made her departure from Fox especially noteworthy.
Trump Himself Reacted to Her Departure
Trump has also expressed surprise at Bartiromo's exit.
According to reports, the president praised Bartiromo following Fox's announcement, underscoring the unusually close relationship between the former television host and Trump's political world.
That reaction has only added fuel to speculation about whether Bartiromo could eventually take another high-profile position.
But Trump's public praise should not be confused with an announcement that she has been offered a government job.
No such appointment has been confirmed.
Leavitt's Departure Created an Important Opening
The White House press secretary is one of the administration's most visible political positions.
Leavitt became particularly prominent during Trump's second term because of her frequent clashes with reporters and her aggressive defense of the president's agenda.
The White House praised her tenure as one defined by a forceful defense of Trump and his America First agenda.
Leavitt herself said she was leaving to spend more time with her young children after returning from maternity leave.
She is expected to remain politically active as an outside adviser to Trump through MAGA Inc.
Her departure therefore does not represent a complete break with the Trump political operation.
The White House Has Already Tested a Rotating Model
The administration is not facing an immediate communications vacuum.
During Leavitt's absence, senior officials including Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had taken questions from reporters.
The same approach is now being used while Trump considers the permanent replacement.
Vance's Sept. 3 briefing was therefore significant not because he had been appointed press secretary, but because it showed the administration's interim strategy in action.
The vice president handled questions directly while the search for a permanent press secretary continued.
The Viral Headline Gets One Important Thing Wrong
The image circulating online describes Bartiromo's departure as “stunning new details” and strongly implies a dramatic political development.
There is a legitimate major story here: Bartiromo has abruptly left Fox News Media after more than 12 years, and the White House is simultaneously searching for a successor to Leavitt.
But it would be inaccurate to report that Bartiromo has been named Trump's new press secretary.
She has not.
Fox has confirmed her departure, but the company has not publicly given a detailed explanation. And Vance has rejected speculation that Bartiromo is about to take over the White House briefing room.
A Major Media Figure Suddenly Becomes a Political Question
The situation nevertheless illustrates how closely Trump's political operation and conservative media ecosystem remain intertwined.
Bartiromo spent more than a decade building a large audience at Fox while becoming increasingly identified with Trump's political movement.
Now she is suddenly outside the network.
At the same time, Trump is searching for a new person to stand behind the White House podium at a critical point in his presidency, with the 2026 midterm elections approaching.
That combination makes Bartiromo's future a natural subject of speculation.
For Now, the Mystery Remains
The confirmed facts are straightforward:
Maria Bartiromo is out at Fox News Media. Karoline Leavitt is no longer White House press secretary. Donald Trump has not named Leavitt's permanent successor. And JD Vance has temporarily stepped into the briefing room.
Everything beyond those facts remains unsettled.
Bartiromo could eventually take another role in Trump's political orbit, but there is currently no confirmed evidence that she will become the next White House press secretary.
For now, the abrupt Fox departure has created a political mystery at precisely the moment the White House has another major communications position sitting open.
And until Trump makes his choice, the podium remains up for grabs.
