Nashville Airport Moves to Rename Itself in Honor of Dolly Parton

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — September 13, 2026 — Nashville International Airport is moving toward a new identity honoring Dolly Parton after its governing board unanimously approved the first formal step toward renaming the major Tennessee gateway.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted 6-0 on September 11 to begin modifying the airport’s name, saying officials will work with relevant parties before determining the final wording.

The decision follows Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s August announcement that state and airport officials intended to honor Parton, whose career, philanthropy, and cultural influence became deeply connected with Tennessee.

Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80. Her death intensified public calls for a permanent tribute, transforming an earlier grassroots campaign into a serious institutional proposal.

A Nashville Metro Council resolution adopted earlier this month specifically requested the name “Dolly Parton International Airport,” while acknowledging that the airport authority retains final naming authority.

The proposal also requires officials to address an existing policy that generally calls for a two-year waiting period before airport facilities can be named for deceased individuals.

That waiting period has become a central procedural issue because supporters argue that Parton’s exceptional contribution to Nashville and Tennessee warrants an immediate exception to the normal rule.

Parton’s connection to Tennessee began in the Smoky Mountains, where she grew up in a large family before building a career that eventually made her an international entertainment icon.

Her Nashville legacy extends beyond recordings and performances. Parton helped strengthen the city’s reputation as Music City while inspiring generations of musicians, songwriters, performers, and visitors.

Her influence also reaches far beyond entertainment through philanthropy. The Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library has distributed nearly 200 million free books to young children across several countries.

BNA itself is an important economic gateway for Middle Tennessee. Airport officials say the facility generated $13.8 billion in economic impact during 2024 and supported approximately 80,000 jobs.

The airport is also undergoing major expansion through its New Horizon program, reflecting Nashville’s rapid growth, rising passenger demand, and increasingly important role in regional commerce.

Officials have emphasized that the airport’s three-letter code, BNA, is expected to remain unchanged, even though the facility’s public-facing name may eventually incorporate Parton’s name.

The final name has not yet been approved. Airport officials say they are considering how to incorporate Parton’s name and legacy thoughtfully rather than announcing a predetermined branding formula.

The renaming could involve extensive operational changes, including signs, legal documents, digital systems, merchandise, maps, communications, and other airport materials across the large aviation complex.

Cost is another consideration. Local reporting has suggested that a complete renaming could require millions of dollars, although the precise expense and funding arrangements have not been finalized.

The proposal has also become a rare point of political agreement in Nashville, where airport governance has been entangled in a broader dispute involving state and local authorities.

Supporters describe Parton as a figure capable of crossing political, cultural, and geographic boundaries, making an airport tribute especially symbolic for a city welcoming travelers from around the world.

The airport board’s vote does not mean the renaming is complete. Officials expect additional decisions, consultations, and implementation planning before a new official identity is introduced.

For Nashville, the proposed tribute would turn one of Tennessee’s busiest gateways into a lasting reminder of Parton’s music, generosity, and extraordinary connection to the state she represented worldwide.

Editorial note: The current reporting confirms that the renaming process has begun, but the final official airport name has not yet been determined. “Dolly Parton International Airport” is the name requested in Nashville’s resolution, not yet the confirmed final name.
