Nepal Marks National Mourning as Devastating Flash Floods Claim Over 1,300 Lives, Thousands Still Missing

KATHMANDU, Sept. 8 — Nepal observed a national day of mourning on Monday for the victims of catastrophic flash floods that ravaged the country's central Himalayan region on August 26, as the death toll climbed to 1,357 and search efforts continued for more than 5,300 people still unaccounted for .
The disaster, believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, unleashed a wall of icy water, rock, and debris that tore through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, devastating communities across at least eight districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and Tanahu . Officials have described the event as a "Himalayan tsunami" .
Staggering Human Toll
According to the latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the confirmed death toll stands at 1,357 as of Tuesday, with 5,326 individuals still reported missing . The highest number of bodies have been recovered in Chitwan district (363), followed by Nawalparasi East (223), Nawalparasi West (222), and Nuwakot (197) . At least 13,583 people have been rescued, and more than 6,600 injured are receiving treatment .
The disaster also claimed at least 43 lives on the Chinese side of the border, with more than 500 people still missing in Tibet's Gyirong county .
Infrastructure and Economic Devastation
Beyond the human tragedy, the floods have inflicted massive damage to infrastructure and the economy. Preliminary assessments by Nepali authorities estimate total property damage at approximately 400 billion Nepalese rupees (equivalent to 2.65 billion USD) , though final figures could differ by 20-30% .
Key infrastructure losses include:
-
Nearly 7,570 homes damaged, with an estimated 20,000 new houses needed in affected areas .
48 government buildings, 55 km of roads, 37 motor vehicle bridges, and 68 suspension bridges destroyed or severely damaged .
13 hydropower projects, one solar plant, and two transmission lines affected, disrupting approximately 783 MW of hydroelectric capacity .
1,806 hectares of agricultural land damaged .
In a related development, a separate landslide in Bajura district this week blocked roads and knocked down 32 electricity poles, further disrupting daily life and power supply .
Search and Rescue Operations
More than 21,000 security personnel have been mobilized for search and rescue operations, with air support critical for reaching inaccessible areas . Despite challenging conditions, rescuers have pulled several survivors from rubble and tunnels in recent days, including a 64-year-old woman found alive more than 10 days after her house was buried in Nuwakot district .
The government has established a high-level task force, led by National Planning Commission Vice Chairman Gunakhar Bhatta, to conduct a comprehensive Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) within six weeks . This report will guide domestic and international reconstruction efforts. The United Nations has launched a $50 million appeal to assist more than 84,000 affected people .
Climate Change and Regional Cooperation
Prime Minister Balendra Shah has highlighted the link between the disaster and climate change, which accelerates glacial melting and destabilizes mountain slopes, increasing the risk of such cascading hazards in Nepal's fragile high-mountain terrain .
In a rare show of cross-border cooperation, China and Nepal are sharing disaster monitoring data on a daily basis. Chinese meteorological authorities have developed a Nepal-customized version of the MAZU intelligent early warning system to support rescue and recovery efforts .
As Nepal begins the long road to recovery, the unprecedented scale of the disaster underscores both the vulnerability of the Himalayan region and the urgent need for enhanced early warning systems and climate resilience measures.
