New Jersey Governor Faces Backlash After Fleeing Migrant Injures Democratic Mayor's Wife

North Brunswick, N.J. — An illegal immigrant fleeing federal immigration agents crashed into a vehicle driven by the wife of a Democratic mayor this week, igniting a fierce political firestorm over New Jersey's recently codified sanctuary policies .

The crash occurred Wednesday morning when a driver, who had been stopped by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of a targeted operation in North Brunswick, refused to comply with officers and sped away . The suspect drove through a red light onto heavily trafficked U.S. Route 130 and collided with a Tesla driven by Dr. Penelope Cohen, a physician and wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen . She was hospitalized with a leg injury but is expected to recover . The driver fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after .

"The illegal alien refused to exit the vehicle or comply with lawful commands from ICE officers," an ICE spokesperson said, detailing that after repeated warnings, officers attempted to safely remove the driver, who then sped away and struck other vehicles .

The incident has quickly become a flashpoint in the debate over the "Immigrant Trust Directive," signed into law earlier this year by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill . The policy sharply limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, a measure Republican critics say forces ICE into more dangerous, unilateral operations that put the public at risk .

"This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents... that wouldn't occur if New Jersey didn't have our sanctuary status," said Assemblyman Paul Kanitra (R-Point Pleasant Beach), arguing that a cooperative framework would have prevented the high-speed chase . Senator Mike Testa (R-Vineland) echoed the sentiment, stating the policy has "emboldened illegal aliens to engage in illegal behavior" .

The political reaction has been sharply divided. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), whose district includes the crash site, blamed the federal agency, posting on social media: "Today, it appears an ICE involved car chase resulted in an accident... ICE's lawlessness is putting innocent people in harms way #AbolishICE" . Her call to abolish ICE drew swift condemnation from Republicans, who criticized the response as deflecting blame from the suspect .

North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack III stressed that local police were not involved in the federal operation and became involved only after the crash occurred . "We understand that an incident involving federal law enforcement activity in our community can raise questions," Womack said in a statement, clarifying the role of his department .
