Former President Barack Obama formally opened his presidential center in Chicago on June 18, using the occasion to reflect on America’s founding, democracy and the unfinished work of the nation.

The dedication ceremony took place only weeks before the United States was scheduled to celebrate its 250th anniversary, giving Obama an opportunity to examine both the nation’s achievements and shortcomings.

Obama said America’s founding represented a radical experiment in self-government, rejecting traditional systems where political power was concentrated among monarchs, aristocrats and inherited ruling classes.

He also argued that the founders failed to fully deliver on the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence, particularly because slavery remained legal and voting rights were restricted.

“In forming our union, the founders fell terribly short,” Obama said, while also crediting them with creating constitutional structures that allowed future generations to continue changing the country.

Obama pointed specifically to the Constitution and Bill of Rights, describing them as a framework that enabled Americans to challenge existing limitations and gradually expand the meaning of citizenship.

His remarks placed the nation’s founding within a much longer historical process, emphasizing that American democracy developed through generations of political organizing, protest, reform and civic participation.

According to Obama, the expansion of democratic participation was not achieved by a single generation. Instead, people across different backgrounds repeatedly pushed the country toward broader inclusion.

He said the center’s exhibits therefore begin with America’s national story rather than his own biography or Michelle Obama’s family history.

The museum includes historical objects connected to the founding era and later movements, including a Declaration of Independence print, Frederick Douglass’s writing equipment, Lincoln’s Bible and material associated with Ida B. Wells.

Obama said the exhibits emphasize principles including human dignity, constitutional checks and balances, an independent judiciary and a free press rather than focusing exclusively on presidential policies.

He also stressed that the military and law enforcement should serve the American people and Constitution rather than any individual president or political party.

The former president presented the center as a place intended to encourage civic participation and help visitors understand the responsibilities that accompany democratic government.

The dedication brought together former presidents and prominent political figures, including Joe Biden, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, alongside Michelle Obama and numerous public figures.

The event also featured entertainers and cultural figures, creating a highly visible opening ceremony for the institution on Chicago’s South Side.

Donald Trump was notably absent from the ceremony. The Washington Post reported that Trump had previously criticized the roughly $850 million center in a social-media post.

Despite political differences, Obama highlighted examples of cooperation across party lines, mentioning Republican figures such as John McCain and Mitt Romney while discussing shared democratic values.

He described democracy as frustrating, slow and sometimes inefficient, but argued that those characteristics are part of governing a large and diverse society.

The Obama Presidential Center opened to the public on June 19, one day after the dedication ceremony, with the campus offering public spaces, gardens and cultural facilities alongside the museum.

The center’s opening marked the culmination of years of planning and construction and established a permanent institution dedicated to Obama’s presidency, American history and civic engagement.

Obama concluded by pointing toward younger generations, saying they were ready to write the next chapter of the country’s story and encouraging visitors to participate in that continuing process.
