Obama Rips Corporate Concessions to Trump: What He Actually Said

A CNN image circulating online carries the headline “Obama rips concessions that businesses and others have made to Trump.” The claim is based on a real October 2025 interview, but the image is not a new September 2026 development.

The original CNN report was published on October 13, 2025, after former President Barack Obama appeared on the final episode of Marc Maron's WTF with Marc Maron podcast. CNN reported that Obama criticized law firms, universities and businesses that had negotiated settlements or other arrangements with President Donald Trump's administration.

Obama's argument was that powerful institutions had more ability to resist government pressure than they sometimes appeared to believe. He said organizations should be willing to accept some financial or political consequences rather than compromise what they considered their core missions.

He specifically discussed law firms facing pressure over whom they represented, universities concerned about federal funding, and businesses responding to administration demands. His broader point was that institutions could choose to resist rather than automatically accommodate government pressure.

The comments came against a backdrop of an extraordinary series of confrontations between the Trump administration and major American law firms.

In March 2025, the administration issued an executive order targeting Perkins Coie. The order sought to restrict the firm's access to federal buildings and government contracts, among other measures. The firm challenged the order in court.

Federal judges subsequently blocked several of the administration's orders targeting law firms. Reuters reported that orders involving Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Jenner & Block and Susman Godfrey were challenged successfully in federal courts, although the administration appealed some of those decisions.

At the same time, other firms negotiated agreements with the administration rather than continue litigation. Reuters reported that nine firms had pledged nearly $1 billion in free legal services and made other concessions in settlements with the White House.

Universities were another major part of the debate. The Trump administration pursued agreements and funding-related negotiations with universities over issues including campus policies, diversity programs and antisemitism.

Obama argued that university leaders should be prepared to tolerate some financial losses when defending what they regard as academic independence. In the podcast, he pointed specifically to university endowments as resources that could help institutions withstand temporary funding pressure.

He also addressed businesses and hiring practices. Obama criticized what he viewed as pressure on companies to change employment policies because of demands from the administration or its allies.

His comments were therefore not a disclosure of some previously unknown agreement between Obama and Trump. Nor did he announce a new legal case against the administration.

Instead, the interview was an argument about how American institutions should respond to political power.

Obama acknowledged that resisting the administration could have real costs. But he rejected the idea that every concession should be justified by comparing the situation to the most extreme examples of political persecution.

That distinction was central to his comments. He said institutions were not yet facing circumstances comparable to the extraordinary sacrifices endured by figures such as Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years imprisoned under apartheid in South Africa.

The comments attracted attention partly because Obama had generally been cautious about making himself the central figure in opposition to Trump. CNN's subsequent analysis noted that Democrats were debating Obama's role and whether he should take a more prominent position in the political conversation.

The timing also mattered. The podcast episode was released during the 2025 federal government shutdown, when disputes between the Trump administration and Democrats were already dominating national politics. Contemporary reporting noted other conflicts involving universities, federal agencies and private institutions.

The image circulating today should therefore be treated as archival political commentary rather than breaking news. Its CNN branding corresponds to a genuine CNN report, but the report dates from October 2025.

There is also an important difference between Obama's criticism and a factual claim that every business or university that reached an agreement with the administration acted improperly. Those institutions faced different legal, financial and operational circumstances, and their reasons for negotiating varied.

Likewise, Trump's administration defended many of its actions as legitimate exercises of presidential authority and argued that some institutional policies required changes. The resulting disputes have frequently ended up in federal court, where judges have assessed the legality of particular executive actions.

That legal distinction is important because political disagreement does not itself establish that an administration's action was unlawful.

Obama's remarks can therefore be understood as a call for institutional resistance to political pressure rather than a claim that every concession was illegal.

The broader issue remains relevant because the disputes raised questions about the limits of presidential power, the independence of universities and law firms, and the willingness of private institutions to absorb financial costs in defense of policies or principles.
