Obama “Tops” a New Poll, but the Numbers Need Context

A viral thumbnail declares, “Bombshell! Obama just topped a new poll — and the numbers are turning heads.” There is a real September 2026 poll behind the image, but the graphic leaves out an important detail: the survey questioned Democratic voters, not the American public as a whole.

The poll was conducted by the Center for Strategic Politics for Liberal Currents from September 3 through September 10, 2026. It surveyed 683 self-identified Democratic voters about political figures, policy questions and the potential 2028 Democratic presidential field.

One of the survey's questions asked respondents to rate their favorability toward a number of prominent political figures. Obama recorded 90% favorable and 4% unfavorable, producing a net favorability rating of +86 among the Democratic respondents surveyed.

That is the figure apparently referenced by the thumbnail. It is indeed striking within this particular survey, but it should not be interpreted as 90% of all Americans approving of Obama.

The poll's sample was specifically Democratic voters. Consequently, the result measures Obama's standing within that political group rather than his nationwide favorability among Democrats, Republicans and independents combined.

That distinction is particularly important when describing the result as a “new poll” or suggesting that Obama has suddenly become more popular nationally.

Obama was not the only prominent Democrat included in the survey. Pete Buttigieg registered 70% favorable and 7% unfavorable, while Bernie Sanders was at 72% favorable and 15% unfavorable.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris recorded 70% favorable and 20% unfavorable. Sen. Jon Ossoff was at 55% favorable and 5% unfavorable, while Gov. Gavin Newsom registered 63% favorable and 17% unfavorable.

The survey also asked Democratic respondents about people who are not expected to be candidates in the 2028 presidential race. Obama was included in that category, making his +86 favorability figure different from a conventional presidential approval rating.

The same survey examined the potential 2028 Democratic primary. On a question asking respondents whom they would support if the primary were held at the time of the survey, Harris received 25%, Newsom 15%, Buttigieg 13%, Ossoff 10%, Mark Kelly 9% and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 8%.

Obama was not presented as a candidate in that primary question. The Constitution's 22nd Amendment limits presidents to being elected to the presidency twice, so the poll's Obama number concerns favorability rather than a potential third presidential campaign.

The survey therefore should not be described as showing Obama “leading the 2028 race.” It shows something narrower: very favorable views of Obama among the Democratic voters included in this particular survey.

There is also a methodological consideration. The Center for Strategic Politics/Liberal Currents survey is a partisan-group survey of 683 Democratic voters rather than a general-population poll. That makes its Obama figure useful for understanding Democratic sentiment, but unsuitable for claiming that 86% or 90% of Americans hold the same view.

Recent polling from other organizations also measures Obama's standing differently. For example, an Ohio statewide poll released in September found Obama with a +8 net favorability rating among Ohio respondents, illustrating how results can change substantially depending on the population being surveyed.

The difference does not necessarily indicate that either survey is wrong. They are measuring different populations: one focuses on Democratic voters nationally, while the Ohio survey represents respondents in a particular state.

The timing of the poll is also noteworthy because Obama has remained active in Democratic politics even after leaving office. Recent reporting says he is preparing to participate directly in the 2026 midterm campaign cycle, including a scheduled Democratic fundraising appearance in October.

His continued political involvement helps explain why pollsters and political organizations continue to measure his favorability alongside current and potential future Democratic leaders.

The poll also comes as Democrats debate their direction heading toward the 2028 presidential cycle. The survey asked about possible candidates, policy positions and other questions intended to measure the mood of Democratic voters.

It therefore provides more than a single Obama number, although the +86 net favorability figure has attracted particular attention because it was substantially higher than the figures recorded for the other political figures tested.

The phrase “numbers are turning heads” in the thumbnail is commentary rather than a polling finding. The underlying numbers can be reported directly without assigning a political judgment to them.

Likewise, calling the survey a “bombshell” is a headline characterization. The more precise description is that a September survey of 683 Democratic voters found Obama with 90% favorable and 4% unfavorable opinions, for a net favorability score of +86.

That result is notable within the surveyed Democratic electorate, but it should not be generalized to the entire United States without additional nationwide polling.
