Obama’s “Old Men Clinging to Power” Remark Revives Questions About Biden and 2024

Former President Barack Obama has renewed a debate over generational change after warning that “old men” clinging to political power remain a major challenge around the world.
Obama made the remarks during a September 21, 2026 conversation at Salem State University in Massachusetts, where he encouraged younger voices to take greater roles in government.
Speaking about leadership, Obama said one global challenge was older men holding onto power because they feared irrelevance and death, while urging audiences not to encourage that pattern.
The comments quickly circulated online because Obama had played a prominent role supporting President Joe Biden during the 2024 presidential campaign, including several major fundraising appearances.
In March 2024, Obama joined Biden and former President Bill Clinton at a New York fundraiser that raised more than $25 million for Biden’s reelection effort.
Two months later, Obama appeared with Biden at a major Los Angeles fundraiser that generated more than $30 million, again publicly supporting the incumbent president’s campaign.
At the June event, Obama praised Biden’s presidency and described the transfer of leadership as a relay race, saying he took pride in the administration’s accomplishments.
Those public appearances are now being revisited because Biden’s reelection campaign ended only weeks later, following mounting concerns about his age, debate performance and prospects against Donald Trump.
After Biden’s June 27 debate performance, questions about his candidacy intensified among Democrats, donors and political commentators, creating pressure on the president to reconsider his campaign.
On July 18, 2024, The Washington Post reported that Obama had privately told allies Biden’s path to victory had significantly narrowed and that he should consider the viability of his candidacy.
Obama’s reported private concerns contrasted with his earlier public appearances alongside Biden, although the former president was not publicly calling for Biden to withdraw during those fundraising events.
Biden ultimately announced on July 21, 2024, that he was ending his reelection campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Reuters reported that Biden’s decision followed an intense period of internal debate, with polling data and concerns about his ability to win contributing to the decision.
Obama subsequently endorsed Harris and became involved in efforts supporting her campaign, while several former Obama advisers also joined Harris’s political operation during the 2024 election.
The sequence of events helps explain why critics have connected Obama’s 2026 comments about older leaders with his role in the 2024 Democratic campaign.
However, describing Obama’s remarks as a direct admission that Biden was wrong to seek reelection would go beyond what Obama actually said at Salem State.
Obama did not specifically identify Biden in his September remarks, nor did he describe his 2024 support for Biden as a mistake or apologize for participating in the campaign.
His broader argument focused on generational renewal, encouraging younger politicians and thinkers to receive platforms while acknowledging that older leaders can still possess valuable experience.
The controversy therefore centers less on a new policy announcement and more on the contrast between Obama’s current call for younger leadership and his prominent support for Biden two years earlier.
Obama’s remarks are now part of a broader Democratic debate over generational change, leadership succession and how the party should balance experience with demands for younger political voices.
