OBAMA’S WARNING ABOUT POWER

OBAMA: “80% OF THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS INVOLVE OLD MEN HANGING ON, WHO ARE AFRAID OF D**TH AND INSIGNIFICANCE, AND THEY WON'T LET GO.”

Former President Barack Obama sparked widespread attention after saying that “80 percent of the world’s problems” involve older men clinging to power because they fear death and insignificance.

Obama made the remark during a sold-out appearance at London’s O2 Arena on September 24, 2025, where he spoke with British historian and broadcaster David Olusoga.

The event, titled “An Evening With President Barack Obama,” attracted more than 14,000 attendees and covered leadership, democracy, political change and challenges facing modern societies.

During the discussion, Obama turned toward the subject of aging political leaders and argued that some remain in positions of authority despite growing concerns about their relevance.

“It’s fair to say that 80 percent of the world’s problems involve old men hanging on who are afraid of death and insignificance,” Obama said during the conversation.

He continued by saying those leaders “won’t let go,” describing a desire to preserve their names and legacies long after their political influence should have ended.

Obama then used the image of ancient rulers building pyramids and putting their names on things to illustrate what he described as an obsession with permanence.

“They build pyramids, and they put their names on everything,” Obama said, adding that such leaders become increasingly anxious about their place in history.

Olusoga responded that history contains many examples of figures fitting Obama’s description, before noting that similar dynamics could also be seen among contemporary leaders.

Although Obama did not explicitly identify Donald Trump in that particular passage, several media reports interpreted the comments as a possible reference to the then-79-year-old president.

The remarks attracted additional attention because Obama discussed Trump elsewhere during the same London appearance, including criticism of statements concerning acetaminophen and autism.

Obama described Trump’s comments about the medication as harmful and argued that political leaders should be careful about making claims that could create anxiety among families.

The former president also discussed broader tensions within American democracy, describing a political struggle between competing visions of the country’s future and the meaning of equality.

His comments about aging leaders, however, quickly became the most widely circulated portion of the London conversation after video clips appeared across social-media platforms.

The phrase “80 percent of the world’s problems” was repeatedly quoted online, although there is no evidence that Obama was presenting the figure as a scientific measurement.

Instead, the statement was delivered as political commentary during a broader discussion about leadership, mortality, political power and the difficulty some leaders have relinquishing influence.

Obama had expressed similar concerns years earlier. During a 2019 private event in Singapore, he said that many global problems involved older people, particularly older men, refusing to move aside.

At that earlier event, Obama argued that political leaders should remember they are serving a temporary role rather than remaining in office to protect personal importance or power.

The London comments therefore reflected a theme Obama had discussed previously: the importance of generational change and political leaders recognizing when it is time to make room for younger voices.

The remarks were widely viewed by commentators as potentially relevant to Trump, although Obama’s wording did not directly name him when making the “80 percent” statement.

The viral quote also generated renewed discussion about the ages of political leaders, succession, political longevity and whether established figures should voluntarily step aside for younger generations.

Ultimately, Obama’s statement was a rhetorical argument about power and leadership rather than a statistical conclusion, while the continuing online circulation has kept his comments at the center of renewed political discussion.
