Off-Duty NYPD Officer’s Split-Second Rescue Prevents Potential Brooklyn Tragedy

An off-duty NYPD officer is being praised after a dramatic rescue in Brooklyn, where he stopped a moving SUV after realizing the driver appeared unconscious behind the wheel.
The incident unfolded Sunday morning near 60th Street and Eighth Avenue in Sunset Park, a busy Brooklyn neighborhood where pedestrians and vehicles were moving through the intersection.
According to ABC7 New York, the officer first noticed the vehicle after it ran a red light, immediately raising concerns about an uncontrolled car in a crowded area.
As the SUV continued forward, the officer recognized that something was seriously wrong with the person driving and moved toward the vehicle without waiting for on-duty responders.
Surveillance footage captured the officer rushing to the SUV, entering the driver's area, and putting the vehicle into park before removing the apparently unconscious driver.
Once the driver was out of the vehicle, the officer began performing CPR, turning what initially looked like a traffic incident into an urgent medical emergency.
The footage shows how quickly the situation developed, with the officer making several critical decisions within moments as the vehicle threatened to become a danger to nearby pedestrians.
People watching nearby initially misunderstood the officer's actions, with some reportedly believing they were witnessing an attempted robbery or carjacking rather than a life-saving intervention.
That confusion changed when the officer began performing CPR, making it clear that his priority was the driver's medical condition and the urgent need to keep the situation from becoming fatal.
Councilwoman Susan Zhuang praised the officer, saying his intervention potentially protected not only the unconscious driver but also pedestrians, children and older residents nearby at the busy intersection.
Zhuang emphasized that an uncontrolled vehicle in a busy neighborhood could have caused additional injuries, making the officer's decision to intervene especially significant.
The rescue was recorded by a surveillance camera installed by Tony Ko of the New York State Fraternal Alliance Organization, providing a detailed record of the emergency.
Ko expressed gratitude toward the officer for having the courage to help someone he did not know, while also highlighting the importance of neighborhood surveillance coverage.
Ko said he hopes to expand camera coverage in the area, arguing that additional footage can help communities document emergencies and understand what happens when dangerous situations unfold.
The officer's actions have drawn attention because he was off duty when the emergency occurred, yet he immediately relied on his training and stepped forward to respond to a stranger in danger.
Despite receiving praise, the officer has reportedly remained humble about the rescue, telling Eyewitness News that he was simply doing his job.
City Council officials are expected to recognize the officer at a private meeting later this month, following public praise for his quick response and apparent lifesaving efforts during the emergency.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what medical condition caused the driver to lose consciousness, and available reports do not establish the driver's current condition.
The incident serves as a striking reminder of how quickly a routine traffic violation can become a medical crisis, particularly on a crowded urban street.
For residents and witnesses, the rescue ultimately became a story of decisive action, as one off-duty officer intervened within seconds and potentially prevented a much larger tragedy.
