Patrick Clancy Threatens Legal Action Over 'Outright Falsehoods' in Online Defamation Campaign

The bereaved father, whose ex-wife Lindsay Clancy's murder trial ended in a mistrial last week, says he has faced "real life threats" from conspiracy theorists who falsely accuse him of involvement in his children's deaths. "Enough is enough," his attorney warns.
BOSTON — Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy, is fighting back against what his attorney calls a "relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign" that has falsely accused him of being involved in the deaths of his three young children .
The statement from Clancy's lawyer, Howard Cooper of Todd & Weld, comes just days after a mistrial was declared on September 4, 2026, when a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in Lindsay Clancy's first-degree murder trial after more than a week of deliberations .
'A Campaign of Misinformation'
"Over the past months, Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign," Cooper said in a statement released Tuesday .
Cooper specifically targeted "minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists" who he says are spreading false claims for profit and social media attention .
"This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims," Cooper stated .
Threats to Reputation, Livelihood, and Life
According to Cooper, the online speculation has led to tangible consequences for Clancy, who has since remarried and moved to New York City .
"This campaign, now fueled by insatiable media coverage, remains at a fever pitch and has resulted in real life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life," the attorney said .
Cooper added that law enforcement has been notified and that legal action is being considered against those responsible .
"Enough is enough — this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop. Those responsible should understand that there will be consequences, and every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally," Cooper said .
The Case That Sparked the Conspiracy Theories
The Clancy case has captivated the nation since January 2023, when Lindsay Clancy — a former labor and delivery nurse — admitted to strangling 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan in the basement of their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home . She then attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down .
Patrick Clancy, who had been sent out on errands by his wife moments before the killings, discovered the scene and made an anguished 911 call . He has publicly forgiven his ex-wife, saying, "I wasn't married to a monster — I was married to someone who got sick" .
Lindsay Clancy pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with her defense team arguing that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and was experiencing hallucinations that commanded her to kill her children . She had been seeking mental health treatment from multiple psychiatrists in the months leading up to the tragedy and was prescribed various medications .
A Mistrial and an Uncertain Future
The trial lasted nearly six weeks, drawing intense media attention and sparking heated online debates . On September 4, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after the jury of nine women and three men said they were deadlocked .
Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will retry Lindsay Clancy. Both sides are due back in court later this month . Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, has indicated he is open to negotiating a resolution and has even suggested he may seek a presidential pardon — though legal experts note that a president cannot pardon state crimes .
Defamation Law and Patrick Clancy's Options
Legal experts say Clancy could potentially pursue defamation claims, depending on the nature of the statements made against him .
"For defamation to apply, a statement must be false, hold the subject up to public scorn, and cause damage," an expert explained. In this case, the allegations that Clancy was involved in his children's deaths would clearly meet that threshold .
Patrick Clancy's attorney emphasized that his client's primary goal is not revenge but protecting his ability to honor his children's memory and advocate for women facing perinatal mental health challenges.
"Patrick has no choice but to address this situation — with the clear goal of stopping injurious behavior, creating accountability for lies that are self-serving to the perpetrators, and being able to return his attention to what matters: preserving the memory of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy and supporting other women facing perinatal mental health challenges," Cooper said .
Why the Conspiracy Theories Took Hold
Experts say the Clancy case is particularly fertile ground for conspiracy theories because it involves a mother killing her own children — an act that defies comprehension for most people .
"So many people on Earth are parents and virtually all of those people love their children and cannot imagine doing something like this," said Michael Wagner, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies how people form beliefs . "When even the defense doesn't dispute that she killed her children, people are often inclined to think: well, how can that be? There must be some other explanation."
Wagner added that the case "really hits a conspiracy sweet spot" because it's universally relatable — unlike election fraud or other political conspiracy theories that only resonate with specific audiences .
