Protesters Confront NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani After Epstein Records Mention His Mother

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced a small protest outside Gracie Mansion in early February after newly released federal records mentioned his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, in a 2009 email.

The confrontation drew attention online after videos showed demonstrators using a megaphone, chanting “shame,” and accusing Mamdani of misleading voters who had supported him during the 2025 mayoral campaign.

However, the viral headline accompanying the supplied image is misleading: there is no credible reporting that Mamdani “kicked them out,” and the photograph shown was taken months earlier.

The photograph depicts Mamdani speaking outside the Islamic Cultural Center of the Bronx on October 24, 2025, during the mayoral campaign, not during the February protest at Gracie Mansion.

According to reporting by India Today and the Times of India, protesters outside the mayoral residence said they had voted for Mamdani and accused him of lying after the document release.

The controversy followed a Justice Department publication of millions of pages of Epstein-related material, which included an email from 2009 mentioning Nair at an event connected to Ghislaine Maxwell.

Fact-checking by Lead Stories confirmed that Nair’s name appears in the released records, specifically in an email describing an after-party for a film screening at Maxwell’s Manhattan townhouse.

That email referenced several prominent guests, but the appearance of a person’s name in the records does not by itself establish criminal conduct, wrongdoing, or participation in Epstein’s crimes.

That distinction became especially important as social media posts circulated photographs falsely portraying Mamdani as a child with Epstein, Nair, and other prominent figures at supposed historical gatherings.

The Associated Press and PolitiFact separately reported that those images were AI-generated and originated from parody or misleading social-media accounts rather than authentic photographs of Mamdani.

The February confrontation therefore combined two different issues: a genuine document mentioning Nair and a separate wave of fabricated imagery that falsely suggested a direct relationship between Mamdani and Epstein.

News reports did not establish that Mamdani himself had been accused of wrongdoing because of his mother’s appearance in the 2009 email, nor did the released material provide such evidence.

Nair is an internationally recognized filmmaker whose work includes “Monsoon Wedding” and “Amelia,” the film whose screening was referenced in the email described by fact-checkers.

The email was written by publicist Peggy Siegal and described an after-party following a screening of “Amelia,” while mentioning Nair alongside several other high-profile attendees at the gathering.

Reports also emphasized that the records contain references to many prominent individuals, illustrating why individual mentions require context before conclusions can responsibly be drawn from the documents.

The protest itself appears to have been limited in size, with social-media videos showing a small group outside Gracie Mansion rather than a large-scale demonstration involving hundreds of residents.

The phrase “you lied to us” became a prominent part of the online narrative because protesters claimed they had supported Mamdani and felt misled by information surrounding the newly released records.

Yet those accusations were statements made by demonstrators, not established findings that Mamdani had lied about his mother, the Epstein records, or any related matter.

The episode also illustrates how rapidly political controversy can become entangled with misinformation, particularly when genuine government documents are circulated alongside altered, AI-generated, or context-free images.

For a reliable account, readers should distinguish the verified document reference, the protesters’ allegations, and the independently debunked images rather than treating all three as evidence of the same claim.
