She Knew the Family From the Inside — Then Hunter Biden’s Ex-Wife Told Her Story

Preview

WASHINGTON — For years, Kathleen Buhle was part of the Biden family’s inner circle as Hunter Biden’s wife. After their marriage collapsed, she began publicly describing the addiction, infidelity and family turmoil she said unfolded behind closed doors.

A Story That Began Long Before Politics

Buhle met Hunter Biden when she was 23, while both were involved with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Oregon. They married in 1993 and eventually had three daughters together.

Her 2022 memoir, If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing, focuses primarily on the breakdown of their marriage rather than presenting itself as a political exposé.

In the book, Buhle describes Hunter as charming and loving early in their relationship before alcohol and drug problems increasingly affected their family life.

She also describes the difficulty of maintaining a marriage while trying to protect their children from the consequences of addiction, secrecy and repeated disruptions at home.

When Things Began to Change

According to Buhle, Hunter's alcohol problems became serious enough that he entered rehabilitation in 2003. Years later, she said his substance use escalated again following periods of sobriety.

One of the most significant moments came in 2015, when Buhle said she discovered a crack pipe in an ashtray outside the family home.

She testified during Hunter Biden’s 2024 federal gun trial that when she confronted him about the pipe, he acknowledged that he had been smoking crack.

Buhle also told jurors that she sometimes searched Hunter’s vehicles for drug paraphernalia before allowing their daughters to use them.

Her testimony was presented by federal prosecutors as evidence of Hunter Biden’s drug use around the period leading to his 2018 firearm purchase.

The Family Became Part of the Story

The situation became even more complicated after the 2015 death of Beau Biden, Hunter’s older brother, from brain cancer.

Buhle described Beau as someone who had been particularly close to Hunter and as an important source of support within the family.

According to accounts from Buhle’s memoir, Hunter subsequently became involved romantically with Hallie Biden, Beau’s widow, a relationship that further contributed to the collapse of his marriage.

Buhle wrote that she eventually learned about the relationship after her daughters became aware of what was happening and the information was disclosed to her.

The episode became one of the most painful chapters in a family already dealing with grief, addiction and the consequences of Beau’s death.

Her Version of the Biden Family

Buhle’s memoir also offers glimpses into Joe and Jill Biden, although her descriptions largely focus on family relationships rather than allegations of political misconduct.

The Washington Post reported that Buhle portrayed the Biden family as close and supportive while also describing a culture in which deeply personal problems were often kept private.

That distinction is important because later political investigations into Hunter Biden’s business dealings generated claims about the wider Biden family that went well beyond what Buhle’s memoir itself documented.

In a 2022 interview with , Buhle said she had spoken with investigators about Hunter’s business dealings, but her memoir was primarily concerned with her marriage and his addiction.

What Her Court Testimony Added

Buhle returned to national attention in June 2024 when she appeared as a prosecution witness during Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial in Delaware.

Prosecutors questioned her about his drug use because Hunter was accused of falsely stating on a federal firearm-purchase form that he was not an unlawful user of controlled substances.

Buhle testified that Hunter could continue working, socializing and interacting with relatives while using drugs, making his behavior difficult for people around him to recognize immediately.

Her testimony was one component of a larger prosecution case that included evidence from Hunter Biden’s devices, photographs, text messages and testimony from other witnesses.

Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges, while his defense challenged aspects of the evidence and the prosecution’s characterization of his drug use.

Beyond the Political Headlines

The image of Buhle as someone who suddenly “flipped” on the Biden family therefore needs some context.

Her public account did not emerge as a single recent revelation. She published her memoir in 2022 and later testified publicly during Hunter Biden’s 2024 trial.

Much of what she disclosed concerned her own marriage, Hunter’s addiction and the effects those problems had on their daughters rather than new evidence about Joe Biden’s political activities.

At the same time, her perspective attracted political attention because she had spent roughly two decades married to Hunter and was therefore familiar with private aspects of his life that later became subjects of public scrutiny.

A Story That Outlived the Marriage

Hunter and Kathleen Buhle divorced in 2017 after roughly two decades of marriage. Buhle later returned to using her maiden name and built a professional life separate from the Biden family.

Her memoir ultimately framed the experience as a story about addiction, marriage and rebuilding her identity rather than a political campaign against her former in-laws.

Yet because Hunter Biden’s personal struggles became intertwined with national political battles surrounding his father, details from Buhle’s story repeatedly resurfaced in the public debate.

What began as the private collapse of a marriage consequently became part of a much larger American political story—one in which family relationships, addiction, criminal proceedings and presidential politics repeatedly collided.
