Trump Blames Biden for Rising Prices, Predicts Oil “Will Drop Like a Rock” After Iran Conflict

Preview

President Donald Trump is again pushing back against criticism over America’s rising prices, blaming the Biden administration while predicting a sharp decline in oil costs once the Iran conflict ends.

In a Truth Social post on September 14, Trump argued that recent price increases were inherited from Joe Biden and claimed prices were now falling sharply across much of the economy.

Trump singled out oil as the major exception, acknowledging that energy prices remain elevated while arguing the increases are primarily connected to the ongoing military conflict with Iran.

His comments came as global oil markets remained under significant pressure, with Brent crude recently trading above $100 a barrel amid continuing concerns about Middle Eastern supply disruptions.

The president said oil prices would fall dramatically once fighting with Iran ends, predicting the decline could happen quickly and suggesting the conflict itself is responsible for much of the current energy pressure.

That prediction contrasts with recent market developments, as renewed attacks on regional energy infrastructure have pushed crude prices higher and increased concerns about disruptions to global supplies.

On September 14, Reuters reported Brent crude rising toward $108 a barrel while U.S. crude approached $103, as attacks and shipping disruptions intensified throughout the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains particularly important because disruptions there can affect a major share of global oil shipments, increasing transportation costs and adding pressure to consumer prices.

Trump has repeatedly connected the Iran conflict with concerns about Tehran’s nuclear program, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon justified the military campaign.

He has also claimed that the United States has prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, although the broader military and diplomatic situation remains fluid as negotiations and conflict continue.

Iran’s nuclear program remains a major international issue, with Washington continuing to pressure Tehran while disputes over inspections, sanctions and nuclear capabilities persist.

Meanwhile, American consumers are still dealing with elevated inflation, weakening Trump’s argument that the affordability problem has already been largely resolved.

The Labor Department reported that consumer prices increased 0.4% in August, while annual inflation reached 3.4%, remaining well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, also increased 0.3% during August, suggesting that price pressures extend beyond gasoline and crude oil alone.

Energy remains particularly significant, however, because higher fuel costs can increase transportation, manufacturing and distribution expenses, potentially spreading additional inflationary pressure throughout the economy.

Trump’s argument places responsibility for current affordability problems largely on Biden, while portraying his own administration as having inherited an economy already damaged by earlier inflation.

Critics counter that voters are judging the current administration based on prices they face today, regardless of when individual price increases originally began.

The political stakes are particularly high because the November midterm elections are approaching, with economic conditions expected to influence voters across competitive congressional districts.

Republicans are seeking to emphasize tax policy, energy production and economic growth, while Democrats are increasingly focusing their campaign messaging on household affordability.

Oil prices could become an especially important political issue if the Iran conflict continues, because sustained energy inflation could affect gasoline, transportation and other consumer costs before Election Day.

Trump has nevertheless expressed confidence that the conflict with Iran will end relatively soon and that oil prices will fall rapidly afterward.

Markets remain less certain, with analysts warning that continued attacks, shipping disruptions and instability around major energy routes could keep crude prices elevated for longer.

The Federal Reserve is also watching the energy situation closely, as persistent oil and gasoline inflation could complicate efforts to bring overall inflation back toward its 2% objective.

For Trump, the message is straightforward: current price pressures are largely inherited, while future relief will depend partly on resolving the conflict that has disrupted global energy markets.

Whether voters accept that argument could become increasingly important as Americans weigh gasoline costs, inflation, economic confidence and foreign policy ahead of the November elections.

The central question now is whether oil prices will collapse after the Iran conflict—or whether continued geopolitical disruption will keep pressure on American households through Election Day.
