Trump “Admits” Live on CNN That He Is Trying to Change the Network? What the Viral Video Leaves Out

Preview

Verdict: TRUE QUOTE — MISLEADING CONTEXT AND RECYCLED AS BREAKING NEWS

A viral video circulating with the headline “Trump admits live on CNN we’re…” is built around a real July 12, 2026 exchange between President Donald Trump and CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

Trump really did say:

“We’re trying to have CNN go on a normal path.”

But the clip is being presented as though Trump had just made a dramatic new admission about taking control of CNN. The underlying exchange was months old, occurred during a phone interview about the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, and did not establish that Trump personally controls CNN or that he had ordered the network to change its journalism.

There is, however, a genuine and still-developing story behind the remark: CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is the subject of a proposed acquisition by Paramount Skydance, and the transaction has attracted scrutiny because of Paramount CEO David Ellison's relationship with Trump. The merger is currently tied up in antitrust litigation and is not complete.

What Trump actually said

The exchange occurred on July 12, 2026, on CNN's State of the Union.

Trump called into the program after the sudden death of Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Tapper interviewed him primarily about Graham's life and their relationship.

Toward the end, Tapper said he wanted Trump to return for a longer interview because he had other questions for him.

Trump agreed.

Then came the line now circulating online:

Trump: “We're trying to have CNN go on a normal path. And we will do that.”

Tapper responded:

“Well, I'm on a normal path right here, sir.”

Trump answered:

“Good. You are.”

So the quotation itself is genuine.

The video's biggest problem: it makes an old clip look new

The uploaded video is presented like a current breaking-news development. It isn't.

CNN's transcript dates the exchange to July 12, 2026. The same quotation was reported at the time by multiple outlets, including The Washington Post, TheWrap and Washington Examiner.

That matters because the surrounding media story has evolved substantially since July.

In August, a federal judge scheduled the antitrust trial challenging the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery transaction for March 2–19, 2027. Paramount agreed not to close the transaction until after the court proceedings or until the contractual deadline, whichever comes first.

And as of September 18, 2026, the deal still had not closed.

So presenting the July quote as a new September revelation is misleading.

Why CNN was part of the merger controversy

The remark nevertheless had a clear media-business context.

Paramount Skydance agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, in a transaction valued at roughly $110 billion including assumed debt. The deal was initially expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.

But 12 state attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America filed antitrust lawsuits challenging the acquisition.

A federal judge subsequently set a trial for March 2027, delaying the transaction.

That is why Trump's July comment attracted attention beyond the interview itself.

Trump has had a long-running adversarial relationship with CNN, while Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has been publicly described as having a friendly relationship with Trump. CNN itself reported that the remark had prompted speculation about whether the president had some interest in the network's future direction.

But speculation is not evidence of a secret agreement.

Did Trump say he controls CNN?

No.

The actual statement was that “we're trying to have CNN go on a normal path.”

Trump did not say:

  • that he owned CNN;
  • that he controlled its newsroom;
  • that he had ordered CNN journalists to change their coverage;
  • that he had personally negotiated CNN's acquisition;
  • or that the network had agreed to follow his instructions.

Those are substantially stronger claims than the words in the interview establish.

The meaning of “we” is also not explicitly defined in the exchange.

Some commentators interpreted it as a reference to the coming ownership change involving Paramount Skydance and the Ellison family. Others treated it as simply another Trump criticism of CNN. Those are interpretations rather than something Trump explicitly explained in that moment.

The Trump-CNN relationship was already complicated

Trump's comments did not come out of nowhere.

He has repeatedly criticized CNN and its coverage of his presidency. At the same time, his administration's Justice Department approved the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in June 2026.

That combination created an obvious political and media-industry controversy: a president who frequently attacks CNN was publicly discussing the network's future while a major transaction involving CNN was under regulatory review.

But the existence of those circumstances does not by itself establish that Trump directed the transaction or CNN's editorial operations.

The proposed merger has also faced opposition from state governments and the Writers Guild of America on antitrust grounds. Paramount disputes those allegations and has argued that the transaction would be lawful and pro-competitive.

The merger is still unresolved

This is the part the viral clip largely leaves out.

The proposed Paramount-WBD deal has not simply gone through.

A federal judge scheduled the antitrust trial for March 2027 after lawsuits from a coalition of 12 states and the Writers Guild of America. Paramount agreed to hold off on closing while the litigation proceeds.

On September 17, the FCC also approved aspects of the transaction involving foreign investment, subject to restrictions on foreign voting control and influence. But that regulatory development did not eliminate the pending antitrust litigation. Reuters reported that the merger remains blocked pending the March trial.

In other words, the corporate ownership question that gives Trump's “normal path” comment its significance is still unresolved.

What happened in the actual CNN interview?

The exchange was also less dramatic than the viral framing suggests.

Tapper initially tried to ask Trump about the U.S.-Iran conflict and the Strait of Hormuz. Trump declined, saying he did not want to discuss those issues out of respect for Graham.

Trump said:

“Don't talk about it. Talk about the reason that you asked me to speak.”

The interview then returned to Graham.

Only afterward did Tapper invite Trump back for another interview, producing the now-famous “normal path” exchange.

So the viral video isolates the final seconds and strips away the circumstances that explain why Trump was on CNN in the first place.

What the viral video gets right — and wrong

ClaimWhat the evidence shows
Trump said “we're trying to have CNN go on a normal path”True
He said it during a CNN appearanceTrue
It was a live CNN interviewTrue
Trump was discussing CNN's futureReasonable interpretation, but he did not define “normal path”
Trump admitted he controls CNNNot established
Trump admitted to secretly taking over CNNNot established
The clip represents a new September 2026 revelationFalse
CNN's ownership situation is genuinely changingYes, but the merger remains legally unresolved

Why the wording “admits” is misleading

“Admits” implies that Trump revealed something previously hidden.

But Trump did not say that he secretly controlled CNN. He made a public comment about wanting the network to move onto what he described as a “normal path.”

The important factual development is not a secret confession. It is the ongoing legal battle over Paramount Skydance's proposed acquisition of CNN's parent company.

That distinction is crucial.

Bottom line

The viral video is based on a real quote, but it is packaged as a much bigger revelation than the underlying evidence supports.

Trump really did tell Jake Tapper in July that “we're trying to have CNN go on a normal path.” The exchange is authentic and occurred on CNN after Trump's phone interview about the death of Lindsey Graham.

But the footage is not new, and Trump's words do not prove that he controls CNN, secretly directs its newsroom or personally engineered the network's ownership change.

There is a legitimate ongoing story behind the clip: Paramount Skydance's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery would place CNN under new ownership, while the deal is being challenged in federal court. The antitrust trial is scheduled for March 2027.

Verdict: TRUE QUOTE — MISLEADING CONTEXT AND RECYCLED “BREAKING NEWS.”
