Trump Claims 'Irrefutable Evidence' Obama Led Seditious Plot to Overthrow U.S. Government

Former president's office dismisses accusations as 'bizarre' and a 'weak attempt at distraction'

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump escalated his long-running feud with former President Barack Obama on Wednesday, posting on Truth Social that there is now "irrefutable evidence" showing Obama was "the ringleader of a seditious plot to overturn the will of the American people and overthrow the United States government in 2016."
The post marks the latest in a series of increasingly aggressive public attacks on his predecessor, whom Trump has accused without evidence of orchestrating a "coup" against him over intelligence assessments regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.
'Arrest Them All'
Trump's post echoed a flurry of late-night activity on his Truth Social account in May, when he shared more than 50 posts over roughly five hours targeting Obama and other political adversaries. One of those posts concluded: "Arrest them all. Prosecute them all. Incarcerate them all at once for treachery, treason, and seditious conspiracy to overthrow the United States government. But first Barack Obama".
Trump has repeatedly described what he claims officials possess as "irrefutable proof that Obama was seditious, that Obama... was trying to lead a coup". He has alleged Obama acted alongside former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Joe Biden, calling Obama the "ring leader".
Obama's Response
Obama's office has forcefully rejected the accusations. "Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response," the office said in a statement. "But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction".
Obama's office also pushed back on a report from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard alleging a "treasonous conspiracy," stating that "nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes". The statement noted those findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee.
Broader Pattern
The latest post comes amid a broader pattern of Trump targeting Obama. In July 2025, Trump posted an AI-generated video depicting Obama's arrest in the Oval Office, and he has repeatedly referred to Obama as the "most DEMONIC FORCE in American politics in decades".
Trump has also shared a racist video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama, which he later deleted amid public outcry.
Representatives for the White House and for Obama declined to comment on the post, according to earlier reporting.
