Trump Marks 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with Pentagon Address, Vows Nation Is 'Stronger Than Ever'

President Donald Trump commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with an address at the Pentagon on September 8, 2026, declaring that the United States is "greater, stronger, and more resilient than ever." The decision to speak at the Pentagon, rather than at Ground Zero in New York, sparked controversy and highlighted the administration's approach to the solemn anniversary .
WASHINGTON – Standing before a 21-foot, 7.6-ton steel beam recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center's south tower, President Donald Trump delivered a powerful address commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks .
The event, titled "Steel Across America," was hosted by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at the White House Ellipse on September 8. The steel beam, which has toured the nation since May, served as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the American people .
"Our nation is greater, more wonderful, and stronger than ever before," Trump told the crowd . "As much time has passed since the 9/11 attacks, we gather on another Tuesday morning in September to reaffirm the sacred vow we made 25 years ago."
The president emphasized that the twisted steel serves as a testament to America's indomitable spirit: "That steel beam is a reminder that our nation is blessed with a power that no fire can consume, no evil can conquer, and no terror can destroy" .
Trump also linked the anniversary to current events, specifically the ongoing conflict with Iran. "The reason we are fighting now is because there was a country that wanted nuclear weapons," he said. "They were on the verge of obtaining them, but now they have no chance at all. They will not have nuclear weapons, and they have paid a tremendous price" .
Controversy Over Ground Zero Absence
Trump's decision to speak at the Pentagon, rather than attend the Ground Zero commemoration in New York, was met with scrutiny. According to reports, the president had requested to speak at the World Trade Center site ceremony, but was denied because the event has traditionally been reserved exclusively for family members reading the names of the fallen since 2012 .
Trump confirmed to reporters on August 28 that he would not attend the New York ceremony, responding simply, "Because I'm going to the Pentagon" . He subsequently attacked a New York Times reporter who reported on the denial, using a derogatory nickname and accusing her of fabricating the story .
"I never wanted to do what the maggot fabricated, and I was happy not to speak, because I've said enough. This is a day to remember the victims," Trump posted on Truth Social .
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum stated that "President Trump is certainly welcome anytime," but did not clarify whether he would attend this year's ceremony .
Vance's Role and Gaffe
Vice President JD Vance represented the administration at the Ground Zero ceremony in New York . However, Vance drew criticism earlier in the week when he used the word "celebrate" while referring to the anniversary during a campaign event in Michigan.
"We're about to 'celebrate' the 25th anniversary of 9/11," Vance said before quickly correcting himself to "commemorate" . He later explained that he meant "celebrate" in the sense of honoring first responders and victims . Critics and families of victims condemned the remark, noting that a day of such profound loss should be reserved for mourning .
