Trump Picks Popular Fox News Host for a Top Position — What Really Happened

The viral graphic says: “Trump Picks Popular Fox News Host for TOP Position.” The claim refers to Jeanine Pirro, the longtime Fox News personality and former New York prosecutor.
And in this case, the headline is substantially true — but the full story is more significant than the graphic suggests.
Trump Chose Jeanine Pirro for a Powerful D.C. Job
On May 8, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that he was appointing Pirro as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, replacing Ed Martin after Martin's nomination failed to gain enough Senate support.
Trump praised Pirro's background as a prosecutor and judge, calling her “incredibly well qualified” and highlighting her years as a Fox News host and co-host of The Five.
The appointment immediately ended Pirro's television career at Fox News. Fox confirmed that she would leave The Five and the network to take the government position.
That made the appointment notable for another reason: Pirro was part of a growing group of Fox News personalities who moved directly into senior positions in Trump's administration. Pete Hegseth, for example, had been a Fox News host before becoming Defense Secretary, while other former Fox personalities also received government appointments.
“Top Position” Is Not Just Hype
The graphic's description of Pirro's new job as a “top position” is fair, although it is obviously promotional language.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia is the top federal prosecutor in the nation's capital, overseeing a major federal prosecution office with jurisdiction over an unusually important range of cases involving federal agencies, government employees and crimes committed in Washington.
Pirro was sworn in on May 28, 2025, with Trump attending the ceremony. The White House described her as the new interim U.S. attorney.
But the story did not end with an interim appointment.
Pirro Eventually Won Senate Confirmation
On August 2, 2025, the U.S. Senate formally confirmed Pirro as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for a four-year term.
The vote was 50-45, along party lines.
That distinction matters. The original viral-style headline makes it sound as though Trump simply handed a Fox host a powerful permanent position. In reality, Trump first installed Pirro on an interim basis, after which the Senate had to consider her formal nomination.
She ultimately received confirmation.
The Justice Department currently lists Jeanine Ferris Pirro as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, with service beginning in 2025.
Why Trump Turned to Pirro
Pirro was hardly an unknown television personality when Trump selected her.
She had spent decades in law enforcement and the courts before joining Fox News. She served as an assistant district attorney in Westchester County, became a county judge, and later served as Westchester County district attorney.
She then became a nationally recognized conservative television personality, hosting Justice with Judge Jeanine before joining The Five. Trump specifically cited that legal background when announcing her appointment.
Her selection also came after Trump's first choice for the D.C. prosecutor position, Ed Martin, ran into trouble in the Senate. Trump withdrew Martin's nomination and moved him to other Justice Department responsibilities before turning to Pirro.
The Political Controversy
Pirro's close relationship with Trump was an important part of the political debate surrounding her nomination.
Democrats argued that her history of strongly supporting Trump and promoting claims about the 2020 election raised questions about her independence as a federal prosecutor. Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, sharply criticized her record after the confirmation vote.
Republicans, meanwhile, emphasized Pirro's decades of courtroom and prosecutorial experience.
The Senate ultimately confirmed her despite the controversy.
The Viral Graphic Gets the Core Story Right
Verdict: TRUE, but heavily simplified.
The graphic's basic claim is accurate: Trump did select a popular Fox News host, Jeanine Pirro, for an important government position. She became interim U.S. Attorney for D.C. in May 2025 and was subsequently confirmed by the Senate in August.
What the graphic leaves out is just as important:
- Pirro was not simply handed a permanent job; she initially served on an interim basis.
- The appointment followed the collapse of Trump's first choice, Ed Martin.
- Pirro left Fox News when she accepted the position.
- The Senate later confirmed her 50-45 for a four-year term.
- She remains the sitting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia as of September 2026.
So this is not one of the viral graphics where the central claim falls apart under scrutiny. The appointment really happened — and the position turned out to be even more permanent and consequential than the original graphic makes clear.
