Trump Says China “Spies” on U.S. as Chinese Satellite Imagery Is Linked to Deadly Iran Strike

President Donald Trump acknowledged that China conducts espionage against the United States after reports linked Chinese satellite imagery to an Iranian missile attack that killed three American troops.

The controversy centers on the July 17 attack against Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, where Iranian ballistic missiles struck a housing area and killed three U.S. service members.

According to U.S. officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, Iran obtained high-resolution satellite images of the Jordanian base from Chinese entities before and after the attack.

The imagery reportedly provided Tehran with detailed information about the American installation, raising questions about whether foreign intelligence contributed to Iran’s ability to target U.S. forces.

However, American officials have not accused the Chinese government of directly coordinating the attack. They also have not publicly identified the Chinese entities that allegedly supplied the imagery.

Trump was asked about the allegations while traveling aboard Air Force One after his visit to Ireland. Rather than escalating the accusation, he characterized intelligence gathering as something both countries routinely conduct.

Trump said China “spies on us,” while suggesting that the United States does the same to Beijing. He also indicated that he did not view the reported activity as necessarily unusual between major powers.

The comments appeared to reduce the immediate diplomatic temperature, particularly because Trump is preparing for a highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.

The planned Trump-Xi meeting is expected to take place in Washington on September 24, although Beijing has not yet formally confirmed the meeting. The satellite allegations could nevertheless become an important security issue.

China has rejected the allegations, describing reports that Chinese entities provided military assistance to Iran as unfounded. Beijing has also insisted that its cooperation with Tehran complies with international law.

Chinese officials have demanded evidence supporting the claims and accused critics of attempting to damage China’s reputation by linking Beijing to Iran’s military operations.

The United States has previously sanctioned Chinese companies over satellite imagery supplied to Iran. American officials are now increasingly concerned that similar information could help Tehran track U.S. military assets across the Middle East.

The concern extends beyond fixed bases. U.S. officials reportedly fear that satellite data could help Iran identify American warships operating around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The allegations highlight the growing importance of commercial satellite technology in modern warfare. High-resolution imagery that was once restricted to major military powers is increasingly available through private companies.

For Iran, access to such imagery could help compensate for limitations in its own reconnaissance capabilities, particularly when attempting to locate American aircraft, bases, ships and other high-value military targets.

The July attack demonstrated the consequences of improved targeting. Three American troops were killed and four others were wounded when Iranian missiles struck the Jordanian facility.

Washington now faces a difficult diplomatic calculation. Confronting Beijing too aggressively could complicate Trump's broader efforts to maintain a working relationship with Xi, while ignoring the allegations could raise concerns about protecting American forces.

The controversy also arrives amid a broader U.S.-China competition over space technology. Both countries are developing increasingly sophisticated satellites and systems designed for reconnaissance, maneuvering and potential military operations in orbit.

For Trump, the immediate priority appears to be preserving diplomatic momentum with Xi rather than allowing the satellite dispute to derail negotiations before their upcoming summit.

Yet the allegations could become difficult to ignore if additional evidence emerges showing that Chinese commercial or state-linked entities knowingly provided targeting information to Iranian forces.

The episode underscores how closely U.S.-China competition is now connected to the war with Iran, satellite surveillance and the rapidly changing nature of modern military intelligence.

As Trump prepares to meet Xi, one question is becoming increasingly difficult for Washington to avoid: Was Chinese satellite technology simply part of global intelligence competition, or did it directly contribute to an attack that killed American soldiers?
