Trump Says “Pretend I’m Running” as He Warns Republicans Could Face Impeachment After Midterm Loss

President Donald Trump has urged Republicans to treat the 2026 midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot, warning supporters that a Republican defeat could lead to impeachment.

Trump made the remarks October 1 at a rally in Durant, Oklahoma, during the opening days of a 32-day campaign tour designed to support Republican candidates before November’s congressional elections.

He told supporters that Republicans perform better when he appears on the ballot and asked them to “pretend I’m running,” linking turnout directly to his political future.

Trump then warned, “If we don’t win, they’ll end up impeaching me,” placing the possibility of another impeachment at the center of his argument for Republican electoral support.

The comment does not mean impeachment would automatically follow a Republican loss. Under the Constitution, the House of Representatives has the sole power to impeach federal officials.

The Senate, meanwhile, has the sole power to conduct impeachment trials, and conviction requires agreement from two-thirds of senators present when the president is tried.

Trump has already been impeached twice, first in 2019 over allegations involving Ukraine and again in 2021 following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Neither previous impeachment resulted in a Senate conviction, meaning Trump remained eligible to seek and hold federal office after both proceedings.

The 2026 midterm elections will determine control of the House and Senate, making congressional majorities particularly important for the administration’s legislative agenda during Trump’s second presidential term.

Trump’s current campaign push comes as Republicans confront competitive races in several states and concerns about voter dissatisfaction over economic conditions, inflation and the administration’s broader policies.

Reuters reported that Trump launched a 32-day campaign tour beginning in Texas and Oklahoma, with plans to visit additional states before the November 3 election.

The Associated Press has reported that Trump is campaigning in heavily Republican areas partly to strengthen turnout, as some Republican candidates face unexpectedly competitive contests.

Trump’s warning about impeachment therefore functions primarily as a political argument about the consequences of losing congressional control rather than as a prediction that impeachment has already been initiated.

A change in House control could give Democrats greater authority over committees, subpoenas and investigations, potentially increasing congressional scrutiny of the Trump administration.

However, investigations and oversight are distinct from impeachment, and Democrats would still need to decide whether particular allegations warranted articles of impeachment under the constitutional process.

The Senate would then determine whether to hold a trial and, ultimately, whether the evidence justified conviction, which requires a two-thirds vote of senators present.

Trump’s statement also reflects the unusually personal nature of the 2026 midterm campaign, with the president repeatedly telling voters that congressional races will directly affect his ability to govern.

Republicans are seeking to maintain congressional control while Democrats are attempting to gain enough seats to influence legislation, investigations and oversight during the remaining years of Trump’s term.

The November election will not determine whether Trump remains president, because the presidency itself is not being contested in the midterms; voters are choosing members of Congress.

Trump’s impeachment warning is therefore best understood as a campaign message emphasizing the stakes he believes Republican voters face, while the actual constitutional process remains dependent on future congressional actions and votes.
