September 21, 2026 — President Donald Trump says Donald Trump Jr. intends to reimburse Russian businessman Umar Kremlev after reports revealed that Kremlev paid substantial expenses surrounding his May wedding in the Bahamas.

President Donald Trump said Friday that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., had told him he would reimburse Russian businessman Umar Kremlev for expenses connected to wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.

The president’s comments came days after ProPublica reported that Kremlev had covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs tied to the May festivities surrounding Trump Jr.’s marriage to Bettina Anderson.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said he asked his son about the report and was told the money would be returned, adding that he had heard repayment was already underway.

Trump had previously said he did not know Kremlev, while defending the broader practice of friends paying for wedding parties as something he considered common and permissible.

The Washington Post later reported that a person close to Trump Jr. said the money had been repaid, creating a slightly firmer account than Trump’s earlier description of planned reimbursement.

Kremlev is the president of the International Boxing Association, a Switzerland-registered organization that has maintained substantial links to Russian sports and business interests during his leadership.

The IBA said Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship in April 2026, an official honor that has added to scrutiny of Kremlev’s relationship with the Kremlin.

Trump Jr. and Anderson married in May during a three-day celebration spread across two private islands in the Bahamas, with roughly 50 guests attending the intimate event.

According to ProPublica, Kremlev paid major expenses that included island accommodations, event planning and a fireworks display, with the total contribution reportedly reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Bettina Trump later confirmed that Kremlev hosted two nights of celebrations after the ceremony, describing the spending as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a personal friend.

The couple disputed the suggestion that Kremlev had paid for the wedding itself, emphasizing that his contribution covered post-ceremony celebrations rather than the formal marriage ceremony.

A representative for Trump Jr. told ProPublica that Kremlev was a personal friend whom Trump Jr. met through hunting and said the two men were not business partners.

Kremlev’s office similarly characterized their connection as a friendship formed several years ago and said political matters had not been discussed with Trump Jr. or other American acquaintances.

The disclosure quickly drew attention on Capitol Hill, where Democrats on the House Oversight Committee opened an investigation and requested information about Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev.

Ranking Democrat Robert Garcia asked Trump Jr. to preserve records and communications involving Kremlev, the wedding celebrations and any discussions with the White House concerning the financing or attendance.

The committee said it was examining possible foreign-influence and conflict-of-interest concerns, although opening an investigation does not establish that any law or ethical rule was violated.

Kremlev’s international profile extends beyond his personal wealth: he leads the IBA, which lists him as president and has previously identified Russian energy company Gazprom as a major sponsor.

Trump, for his part, defended his son’s acceptance of the original gift while also stressing that repayment would remove the financial connection that had triggered much of the controversy.

The episode has attracted heightened attention because Kremlev is a prominent Russian figure with documented Kremlin connections, while congressional investigators have raised questions about foreign access to the president’s family.

For now, the central factual distinction is timing: Reuters reported Trump saying his son planned to repay Kremlev, while later Washington Post reporting said a person close to Trump Jr. confirmed repayment.
