Trump Vows Gas Below $2 a Gallon After U.S. ‘Wins War with Iran’

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 — President Donald Trump on Monday forecast that American gasoline prices could eventually fall below $2 a gallon once the United States achieves victory in its conflict with Iran, putting cheaper energy at the center of his latest argument for continued military operations in the Middle East .
In an all-caps post on Truth Social, Trump linked high energy costs directly to the ongoing war and asserted that post-war markets would stabilize rapidly .
"Oil prices will drop precipitously, like everything else is dropping (but more!), when we WIN the war with Iran," Trump wrote. "Three Dollars a gallon, but ultimately, below Two Dollars a gallon" .
The president reiterated his longstanding threat that the United States will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. "It will all happen quickly, and Iran will never have a Nuclear Weapon. MAGA!" he added .
Escalating Energy Threat
The promise comes as energy infrastructure and oil shipping increasingly feature in public threats exchanged between Washington and Tehran . Earlier Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a stark warning against any U.S. misadventures targeting Iranian energy facilities, stating that Iran's oil and gas production chain is "sprawling, accessible, and exposed" .
"American oil and gas companies across these waters and facilities share that exposure," Ghalibaf posted on X. "Strike our assets, and you get struck" .
Political Context
The president's forecast comes as voters increasingly feel the pinch of rising costs of living with midterm elections approaching . Average U.S. gas prices have remained above $4 per gallon throughout August, marking a jump of nearly 30% compared to a year ago . Diesel has also edged toward record territory, closing in on an all-time high of $5.80 per gallon .
Trump has previously argued that higher oil prices are a necessary price to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. In May, he stated that even if oil prices reached $200 a barrel, "it would have been worth it" . The president has also said he will "never apologize" for Americans paying higher gas prices as a result of the conflict .
This marks the latest in a series of Trump's social media salvos against Tehran. Over the weekend, he shared AI-generated imagery depicting Iran with its borders carved in the outline of his face and a graphic threatening Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal with the caption "Bye Bye, Kharg" .
