Trump Warns Iran It Will Be “Hit Very Hard” If Linked to Flydubai Incident

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Iran would face severe retaliation if investigators establish that Tehran was connected to the attempted attack aboard a Flydubai passenger flight bound for Israel.

The warning came on October 1, one day after Flydubai flight FZ1073 was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following a violent confrontation inside the cockpit.

The aircraft was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain. The plane subsequently experienced a dramatic loss of altitude before passengers and crew intervened.

According to reporting on the incident, the aircraft carried more than 170 passengers. The injured captain was able to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to help restrain the co-pilot.

The aircraft eventually landed safely in Tabuk. Saudi authorities then detained the suspect while the circumstances surrounding the incident began to receive international investigation.

The severity of the incident was underscored by flight-tracking data showing an extremely rapid descent. Reuters reported that the aircraft lost roughly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the emergency.

The United Arab Emirates has opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining the circumstances, possible motives and whether the episode had any connection to terrorist activity or prior planning.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the suspected attacker as having undergone Islamist radicalization. However, he initially said it was too early to determine whether Iran was involved.

That distinction is important because an investigation into possible terrorism is not the same thing as establishing Iranian responsibility. As of October 2, public reporting had not established that Tehran ordered or directed the incident.

Trump nevertheless went further in his public comments.

Asked whether the Flydubai co-pilot was connected to Iran, Trump said, “I would say the answer, based on what I'm hearing, is yes,” while adding that officials were still working on the matter.

A reporter then asked whether the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, might have placed the individual on the flight or whether he had instead been radicalized independently.

Trump responded, “Could've been, yeah,” without providing public evidence supporting either possibility.

Trump was subsequently asked whether the United States would retaliate against Iran if Tehran were determined to be responsible.

His answer was direct: “Oh, they'll be hit very hard.”

The statement in the viral graphic therefore reflects a genuine Trump warning, but the wording needs an important qualification. Trump did not establish that Iran was responsible; he warned of consequences if such a connection were confirmed.

 

 

 

The distinction is especially significant because several investigations are proceeding simultaneously. UAE authorities are investigating the incident, while Saudi and Israeli authorities have also been involved in examining what happened and the suspect's background.

The co-pilot's reported Omani nationality has also become part of the investigation. CBS reported that an Omani official said the suspect was born in Oman and currently held Omani citizenship, although the Omani government had not publicly confirmed those details at the time of publication.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have discussed possible ideological radicalization. Netanyahu said the suspect appeared to have been subjected to Islamist radical indoctrination, while also acknowledging that the question of an Iranian connection remained unresolved.

That leaves several possibilities under investigation, including an individual act, extremist radicalization, a broader terrorist plot, or possible outside direction. None of those explanations should be treated as conclusively established at this stage.

The incident also comes during an already tense confrontation between Washington and Tehran, making any confirmed evidence of Iranian involvement potentially significant for the wider conflict.

For now, the clearest established facts are narrower: a Flydubai flight experienced a violent cockpit incident, the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, the suspect was detained, and multiple governments are investigating the motive.

Trump has publicly indicated that he believes there may be an Iranian connection based on information he says he is receiving. But neither the public evidence described in current reporting nor the investigation has established that Tehran directed the attack.
