A Ho Chi Minh City court on September 3, 2026, handed down 11 death sentences and 19 life sentences to members of a transnational drug ring that smuggled over 11 kilograms of narcotics from France to Vietnam — using unwitting flight attendants as mules .

HO CHI MINH CITY — After nearly 20 days of trial proceedings, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City delivered its verdict in one of Vietnam's largest drug trafficking cases, sentencing 227 defendants in the sprawling "Special Case VN10" .

The court sentenced 11 defendants to death, 19 to life imprisonment, and handed down prison terms ranging from 18 months (suspended) to 29 years for the remaining defendants on charges including drug trafficking, transportation, storage, and organizing illegal drug use .

The case originated on March 16, 2023, when customs officials at Tan Son Nhat International Airport discovered 327 tubes of toothpaste in the luggage of four female flight attendants on Vietnam Airlines flight VN10 from France . Of these, 157 tubes contained a combined total of more than 11 kilograms of ketamine and MDMA .

The Mastermind and The Network

The operation was orchestrated by Ha Danh Nam, identified as the ringleader who directed the network from overseas . Nam remains at large and was tried in absentia after an international arrest warrant was issued .

According to the indictment, Nam had successfully smuggled seven shipments of drugs from France to Vietnam using sophisticated concealment methods . Drugs were hidden in toothpaste tubes, dietary supplements, and other consumer goods, then shipped via courier services or carried in luggage by flight attendants and Vietnamese expatriates .

After the March 2023 seizure, Nam instructed his contacts in Vietnam to destroy evidence, but investigators quickly arrested key figures in the network .

Key Figures and Sentences

The 11 defendants sentenced to death were all convicted of drug trafficking, including:

Ha Danh Nam (born 1974) – the ringleader, tried in absentia, held responsible for trafficking nearly 18 kilograms of drugs .

Hoang Sy Thang (born 1987) – the primary receiver of the drug shipments in Vietnam, who then distributed them to dealers . Thang received a life sentence for drug transportation .

Bui Van Anh (born 1997) – Thang's nephew and assistant, also sentenced to life .

The remaining nine death sentences went to key members of the distribution network: Le Thang Anh Tu, Le Nguyen Gia Bao, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Van Hoang Minh, Pham Duc Duy, Tran Kien An, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Pham Anh Khoa, Trinh Bao Quan, and Nguyen Xuan Hieu .

Celebrities Caught in the Web

The trial also drew attention for the involvement of several public figures convicted of organizing drug use:

  • Chi Dan (real name Nguyen Trung Hieu, born 1989), a popular singer, was sentenced to 7 years in prison .

  • An Tay (Andrea Aybar Carmona, born 1995), a model, received 8 years on charges of organizing drug use and drug possession .

  • Nguyen Do Truc Phuong (born 1994), a TikToker and philanthropist once known as the "charity fairy," was sentenced to 6 years . Phuong had previously received a "Beautiful Young Person" award in 2020 from the Vietnam Women's Union for her charitable work .

  • The Flight Attendants

The four flight attendants who unknowingly carried the drugs were not prosecuted, as investigators determined they were unaware of the narcotics hidden inside the toothpaste tubes . They had been hired simply to transport consumer goods from France to Vietnam for a fee of approximately 6.5 euros per kilogram .

    A $1.16 Billion Drug Empire

The investigation, designated "Special Case VN10," uncovered a staggering scope of criminal activity. The total transaction value of the drug network was estimated at 29,000 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $1.16 billion USD) . More than 2,700 suspects were prosecuted in 477 related cases .

Vietnam has some of the world's strictest drug laws, with trafficking as little as 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of methamphetamine potentially carrying the death penalty . This case stands as one of the largest prosecutions in the country's history — a stark warning to drug traffickers, and a cautionary tale for anyone who might unwittingly become a mule in a transnational smuggling operation.
