What Hunter Biden's Ex-Wife Said About Their Marriage and His Addiction

A viral graphic circulating on social media shows Hunter Biden and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle side by side, with the headline: "HUNTER BIDEN'S EX-WIFE FLIPS! – Dishes on Biden Family Secrets." The image has sparked intense speculation about a tell-all revelation. But what Buhle actually wrote in her memoir is far more personal — and far less politically explosive — than the graphic suggests.
The graphic features two portraits: Hunter Biden in a suit and tie, and Kathleen Buhle in a pink top. The caption promises a "flip" — a term typically used in legal and political contexts to describe someone turning against their former allies. The implication is that Buhle has turned on the Biden family with damaging revelations.
The reality is more complicated.
What Buhle Actually Wrote
In her 2022 memoir, If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing, Kathleen Buhle detailed the breakdown of her 24-year marriage to Hunter Biden. The book was not a political exposé. It was a personal account of betrayal, addiction, and healing.
The most widely reported revelation concerned how Buhle discovered Hunter's affair with Hallie Biden — the widow of his late brother, Beau. According to the memoir, Buhle learned of the affair when her daughters found text messages on Hunter's phone.
"I got confirmation that Hunter was having an affair with Hallie when my daughter called me," Buhle told CBS Mornings. "She was at the therapist's office, and she said, 'Mom, Dad's phone kept going off, and we looked at it, and it's Hallie.'"
Buhle also wrote about Hunter's struggles with addiction, describing how his drug and alcohol use "threatened the family's finances" and contributed to the end of their marriage.
What the "Flip" Label Gets Wrong
The term "flips" implies a legal or political betrayal — a witness turning against a target. Buhle has not done that.
She has not accused Joe Biden of any wrongdoing. She has not testified against Hunter in any criminal proceeding. She has not provided evidence of corruption or influence-peddling. Her book is a personal memoir, not a political indictment.
In interviews promoting the book, Buhle was careful to emphasize that she still cares for the Biden family. "Anger is such a heavy weight to carry and I was in a lot of pain," she wrote. "And when I made the decision to divorce, I wanted to let go of all of that".
The Context: A Family's Private Pain Made Public
The memoir's revelations were significant — but they were also painful for the entire Biden family. Hunter Biden publicly acknowledged the affair and the end of his marriage, writing in his own 2021 memoir that the relationship with Hallie began as a way for two grieving people to hold onto the memory of Beau.
Joe Biden, then president, issued a statement supporting his son and Hallie. "We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness," he said.
